It sounds like a belt you might get for your sister, but this belt isn't just for style. But in doing so, they shave off the grain, which is the top layer and the toughest and most protective part of the leather, and then your leather belt just falls apart sooner than later. But those guys actually want the belt to break, then you have to buy another. So it creates recurring revenue for them. If there is a little bit of grain still there, then that's called Top Grain leather. We buy the expensive A Grade Leather with the full amount of grain (full grain) leather and make leather belts with it.\u003c\/p\u003e \u003cp\u003e---\u003c\/p\u003e \u003ch2\u003eLeather Belts made from Old Bulls\u003c\/h2\u003e \u003cp\u003eWe don't just buy the standard 1\/8\" thin leather; we buy the most expensive leather that is just under 1\/4\" thick. I can only get it this thick by ordering \"Heavy Steer\" hides. Most cows are slaughtered between 15 to 18 months old, but these bulls lost their lives at about 24 months old. That extra time doesn't give them much more meat, but it does give them thicker skin. That's important because the hormones now are redirected to muscle and size. Vegetable tanning takes a long time to do right. Low quality tanneries only soak it for two to three weeks, but ours was allowed to soak up the tannins for 6 to 8 weeks which makes it stronger and last longer, which in turn makes your leather belt to be stronger and lasts longer too. The problem is when you go to a store and ask for a leather belt that's at least 3\/16\" thick they will give you a blank stare. Why? Because the vast majority of leather belts out there are paper thin, less than 3.8 mm. Not full grain leather, and more specifically, not old bull leather.Measure your current belt and see. Unless it is a Saddleback Leather Belt, you will probably find the measurement to be less than 1\/8 of an inch thick. To make a living, the belt makers think they have to cut as many belts out of a hide as possible, and that's only possible if they use very thin leather that's been shaved down. The shingles are the same as the grain of a hide of leather. It's pretty much the top 25% of the hide. It's the toughest most watertight part with all of the tight hard fibers. A lot of companies sand or split off the top of the hide with all of the grain to get rid of the scars and blemishes but remove all of the grain. It's like taking off the shingles of the roof. You still have a roof, but it won't last long. And then lined the thick leather with pigskin, which is stronger than the cow skin. And if this leather overnight bag weren't strong enough with that, we sew it all together with our strangely strong industrial marine grade and UV resistant polyester thread. Nylon thread is cheaper but it deteriorates when the sun hits it. Our custom hardware is maybe a little overkill. It's 316 Stainless Steel (please please google it). But when I asked them if they knew anything about the Shironameshi leather, they laughed and told me it was made up and didn’t exist, but I believed them about as far as I could throw them. We stopped at a Samurai leather workshop but nobody answered the door. Then we stopped at a horse hide tannery and they pointed us up the road to a building along the river with no signs to be found. Our taxi driver got out and started knocking on some old metal doors until someone finally opened up. She explained to them what we were looking for and I saw that person make a call. About 10 minutes later, a man and his wife pulled up in a car and parked in front of us. We all got out and greeted eachother with bows and then walked in through an industrial looking door into a dark building. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e \u003cp\u003e---\u003c\/p\u003e \u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eWe talked for a bit through Google Translate and then he disappeared to another room. When he came back, he had a cream colored whole hide over his shoulder and laid it out on a table in front of me. And there it was. The hardest to find and most special leather on Earth and I was rubbing my hands on it. The maker of the Shironameshi leather went on to explain that 25 years earlier, he had been reading some thousand year old writings about the river that runs through town and in there they talked about how they tanned leather in that river with just salt. No tannins, no brain matter, no chromium or anything else.
