Design of the Best Travel Duffle Bag: The Adolescent Beast
Two big pieces of full-grain leather are sewn together to make up the main body of this travel duffle bag, and then one solid piece for each end. The top stays securely closed with three really thick leather straps on the front side and one on each end. The straps loop through a durable stainless steel ring attached to the top and then buckle on the front. There are nine holes in each strap to allow it to cinch down on small loads or extend way out if it’s jam packed full. This leather duffle bag is ideal for a week or longer of travel. It can also be great for those spontaneous weekend trips with the kids.
The inside is lined with super strong pig skin, even stronger than what comes from cows. I added big inside pockets on each end of the bag, also made out of pig skin. They’re extra roomy and make a good place to keep your smaller belongings, like electronic chargers or toiletry items, organized if you aren’t fortunate enough to own one of our leather toiletry bags.
The 27” Leather Duffle can be carried by means of the comfortable padded carry handle centered on top, or by the removable, adjustable shoulder strap.
Full Grain Leather Is Used For The Best Duffle Bags for Travel
We only use the strongest full-grain leather you can find. It’s called “full-grain” because we don’t shave any layers off like a lot of other leather bag designers do. Instead, we leave the top layer on, which is the strongest of all the layers. Sometimes we get some very unique hides by doing this. They may contain beautiful scars and markings, which really can add extra character.
Durable Construction Involves Sewing It Right
Our sewing process is notable as well. A sewing machine is essentially a perforator, in a sense. The more holes you put into the leather, the more potential you have to create a tearing point. So we space our holes out to 5 stitches per inch. We use robust polyester thread to hold everything together. It is a marine-grade and UV resistant thread, which is why all the best ship sail makers use it when they sew their sails together. Nylon thread is cheap and much thinner, so it’s sure to start breaking and deteriorating over time.
316 Stainless Steel To Support Almost Anything (just not 751 cats)
As if this leather duffle bag wasn’t already over-engineered, the hardware we use is no weak link. All rings, clasps, and buckles are made from 316 Stainless Steel which has a load rating many times more than what you’d even be able to fit in the bag. The clasps have been tested to hold up to 750 lb bags of cats without breaking. When we put the 751st cat in there, it broke.
Functionality
Both the Beast and Baby Beast are among the most popular of our leather duffle bags. This isn’t the kind of bag with a bunch of exterior pockets or a padded laptop compartment; this is made for travel.
Sure, you can grab a leather padded laptop sleeve, toss it in, and clip on a Saddleback leather satchel for your external pockets if needed. But this is designed to be your primary bag for traveling. The main compartment is very large and can handle even heavy gear, all the way down to your dirty laundry. In addition, two internal pockets are also quite large for easy carry of your travel gear.
Adjustable Shoulder Strap
When you load these duffle bags down, you might want to avoid carrying them by hand. While you work up your strength to do that, use the adjustable shoulder strap for carrying comfort unless your wife is looking. That is when you grab the handle up top and carry it like a real man. Then when she isn’t looking, enjoy the comfort of the padded straps. I didn’t put removable backpack straps on this one for a backpack carry; it just wouldn’t make sense. So instead, I just placed a single shoulder strap. The shoulder straps are made for strength and comfort.

Is it spelled duffel bag or duffle bag?
This is one thing people go back and forth on. We actually use the term “duffle bag”, but both are perfectly acceptable. It all depends on what you grew up calling it. Duffel was named after a small town in Belgium where they were initially made. Still, most Americans would not search for the best duffel bags or the best travel duffel bag. They are going to search using the term duffle. Either way, it’s a great bag!
