There is no luck in making a quality leather backpack. And this leather backpack with pockets is no exception. It was purposefully designed with no breakable parts like zippers, snaps, or velcro. And any stress spot is reinforced with Polyester straps hidden beneath the leather and riveted. The body of this leather backpack is built with just two big pieces of leather, which means there aren't many seams. The fewer the seams, the stronger the backpack because backpacks come apart at the seams before anywhere else. And then we only sew 5 stitches per inch, so there are as few holes as possible. Quality can be measured in Seam Feet (how few feet of seams a bag has. We made that term up).
---This backpack is made out of strong materials. The full grain leather is very tough and more resistant to water. The lining is made from pigskin, which is even stronger than cowhide. The hardware is made from 316 Stainless Steel, which is very strong and will not rust. The thread used to sew the backpack together is Polyester, which does not deteriorate in the sun as nylon thread does.
---The leather of this backpack is the strongest and most water-resistant we can find (full grain), and then we line it with pigskin, which is stronger than the cow skin. It's rare for a low-quality company to use full grain to make a leather backpack because it's so expensive. When I say "Full Grain Leather" I mean that it still has all of the tough, tightly woven fibers on the top of the hide.
---Most companies shave off the scars and blemishes from the top of the hide (watch how they shave it here at minute 6:30) and shave off the strongest and best part of the hide (the grain) while doing it. They shave it down to genuine leather. They do it, so they don't have to cut around the marks and throw those pieces into the trash as we do. We throw away 25% of the hide. They don't throw hardly anything away. But since it still has leather, they can call it a genuine leather backpack. It will not last nearly as long and is missing the beauty.
---Vegan leather is ridiculous. It doesn't even make sense. It's usually polyurethane or PVC, which is a plastic. Do you want to wear a plastic backpack? No? We don't want you to either. You and I both know that will not last longer than your carebear backpack as a kid.
---I know using 316 Stainless Steel custom hardware is kind of like killing a fly with a shotgun, but we did it anyways. Check that one off the list of potential problems. Our large pieces of hardware on our backpacks are rated strong enough to hold a 750 lb. bag of cats before it gives. Seriously, I hope you google it to understand more. If your life is going to depend on any metal, let it depend on 316 Stainless Steel.
---We sew it all together with thick and strong Polyester thread. It's industrial strength and doesn't deteriorate with exposure to the Sun's UV rays like Nylon thread does. This Leather Backpack is very strong from the nature of the materials we use.
---We know not everyone has the same style. So this leather backpack with pockets comes in four different colors. The light tan color (called Tobacco) develops a beautiful patina over time. There's also Dark Coffee Brown, Chestnut (reddish brown), and Black. So find the style that will suit you.
---The interior main compartment has enough space for your 17" laptop, a charger, other electronic gear, some personal items, your passport, a book, or possibly a few books. You could probably even fit a monkey in there if you had to. But we wouldn't recommend that. This is a very durable leather bag with plenty of room.
---We want this leather backpack to be easy to carry on and off your back. So we made the most comfortable straps that are easily adjustable. This makes for easy access as you take it off to grab something out and toss it back on your back.
This backpack by far is my go to when going anywhere. I have several and even own a Saddleback Squared Backpack. Nothing turns heads and gets more appreciation that’s this bag. I purchased it in the Dusty Carbon color. It was the only way I wanted to buy it. Hands down the best color out of any of them. If you want this backpack, get it! It will not disappoint you in anyway. I now have, in total, 13 pieces of Saddleback and will have more down the road. It’s all about quality. You get it with Saddleback. One more thing, BRING BACK DUSTY CARBON FOR GOOD!

I was given this today for my birthday and needless to say it was a lovely surprise. I have wanted a Saddleback for quite some time and was very interested to see how my idea of your bags matched with the reality. I was given the black leather version of the large front pocket BP, which I believe is chrome-tanned and is a smooth, shiny/slippy leather. Boot leather indeed. Perhaps less luxurious or sensual than the veg-tanned stuff but it is great for hard use and more discreet without the pull-up effect. This is a proper piece of well-finished leatherwork. I am 5 ft 7, not particularly broad or overweight and was given the large model. It does not overwhelm my frame. The side pockets don't extend sideways beyond my back and pack does not reach my jeans or go higher than my neck. (this is with the straps tied 7 holes from max length and nothing in the bag). It sits nicely planted. It is only a little heavier than my Ona Brixton, the leather on which is thicker and more marked. It is very interesting to compare the two side-by-side, with the chic, "Italian" bag more rough and ready than the "American Tank". The only reason this pack does not receive 5 stars is that I have not tested it. If it is still going strong in a few years, I will come back and update my review. To sum up, I am very happy with this pack and hope to put it through its paces in the future. Good leather is never cheap but unfortunately the old adage "you get what you pay for" has never been so false in the malls and designer boutiques of the world. Keep up the good work Saddleback. We need people like you. :-)

I admit that I normally do not write product reviews, but I do read them before making purchases from suppliers I do not have experience with. However...I'm compelled to do so with this backpack. I'm blown away, as the review title indicates. It's everything that Saddleback claims it is. I wholeheartedly agree with the vast majority of reviewers: This backpack is amazing. The build quality is exceptional. I bought it because I need something that is going to stand up to years of tough handling, unintended abuse, and heavy travel. I will be hard on it but will do what I need to preserve it as recommended. I can't wait to see it in a couple of years after it gets broken in. I didn't buy it to impress anyone, but already I've had 3 people ask me where I got it. I showed it to my daughter and told her about Saddleback's claim...they will fight over it when you're dead. She smiled a smile that said, they gotta go thru me to get this when the time comes. If you are in the market for a backpack that won't be squeamish about taking its lumps...and look good doing it...check it out. Expensive? Well, it ain't cheap. The CFO of the family (my wife) wasn't happy about the purchase. Then it showed up at the front door. When I handed it to her, all she said was "Wow". Not another word mentioned about the cost. There are several travel bags/backpacks/computer bags in this household that are going to find new a new home. I'm confident this is the last one I'll ever own. Oh...one last thing...the smell is incredible. The icing on the cake..with sprinkles.

I was so excited to receive my backpack. I’ve been wanting to get this particular one for about 2 years and finally made the investment. So glad I did and have no regrets. Right out of the box the quality is evident and the smell of leather is amazing. Looking forward to traveling with this bag and using it on the daily. I bought this backpack because of the Saddleback reputation and will continue to buy from Saddleback Leather!
