Living a year with the XL

I have the XL in the discontinued Carbon Black (it wasn't really black as much as it was a gunship gray). After having it a year, I have a few recommendations and observations: 1. Get the XL only if you're really sure you need the space. Otherwise, Large or the Thin models would be ideal. As a corporate trainer, I travel with lots of equipment: Projectors, laptops, demo models, presentation materials. When fully weighed down, the bag routinely weighs 40lbs. (Side note: I do get questions, comments, jokes when I set down such a massive bag: "Where'd you get that?" is common.) 2. The leather does soften and become more pliable, but not to the point where it creases or cracks. However, due to the size, the XL has a hard time staying upright. It always settles with the hardware and straps facing down, like it slumps over from the weight of the inside pockets. I can live with that. 3. The XL isn't really practical for flying. If modestly packed, it will fit overhead. If packed to the seams, maybe not. Even modestly packed it barely fits under the seats of full size planes, but not under little regional jets. The quality of the leather, however, makes this an ideal travel bag. I travel 20% of the year and it might sound brutish, but I don't hesitate to throw this bag under the seat and kick it in and yank it out. It takes an obscene amount of abuse and the leather has this Terminator 2-like way of self-healing. 4. When I do fly with it, it doubles nicely as a luggage and briefcase combo. If you like to travel "light" (not light in terms of weight), then the XL easily stores your work materials plus a pair of pants or two, some shoes and shirts. Here's a decision tree: Are you part Sherpa? If yes, then get the XL. If not Sherpa, then don't.

    A Timeless Classic

Over seven years ago, I received the xl chestnut color classic briefcase as a high school graduation gift. Ever since I have used the briefcase as my daily carrier - I just love it. The classic design was well thought out and the bag is very versatile. I do understand the major complaint with the bag about it's weight but honestly you adjust to it. I would recommend this bag to anyone who is looking for a timeless classic which will last many generations! PS. I often get compliments about the bag.

    A Classic Briefcase

I received my Large Tobacco Classic Briefcase about a month ago, and have used it almost everyday. And while it is an amazing Indiana Jones man purse that women(and men) love to compliment, I want to comment on the bag itself, not how great I look carrying it around. This is my first Saddleback product, and after a month I can tell that this bag is going to last the rest of my life. I have already already crammed it under airplane seats and stuffed it with cloths, textbooks, notebooks, Hydroflasks, my 15" macbook, ridden my bike in snow a storm with it strapped on my back, and it might just have started to break in. To call this bag rugged would be stating simple truth. I am not going to artificially break in or distress my bag, I want to earn every scuff and stain. And in a decade or so when it is finally broken in, it will be able to tell you stories all on its own. The new suede pigskin lining is amazing, and i am very happy that it has replace the older plastic looking lining finish. This bag is heavy there are no two way around it, but that is the price of durability, and my shoulder is just getting that much stronger. This bag is expensive, but if are children and grandchildren are still using it in 50 years, then it is paying for itself. The layout inside the bag is very efficient and functional. Though I wouldn't mind if he produced a leather sling for holding hyrdoflasks or other larger water bottles outside the bag. While I find Dave to be a bit of a weirdo, his product is truly superb.

Best use of cowhide in my closet

No doubt about it - this case is both beautiful craftsmanship and solid construction. You know you're carrying the best and the looks/comments the bag collects testify to that as well. Some things I really like: The carrying strap has plenty of adjustment room and the double pads ensure a comfy ride Haven't had a chance to use the multiple stainless rings but they offer lots of choices Outer end pockets come in handy Nice, full handle - you know you're carrying a real bag Sturdy enough to probably double as a tornado shelter if necessary.

    The Elephant

I got my extra large briefcase over a year ago and I can tell you one thing (or maybe 2 or 3 things...) the extra large is large indeed. If you have any qualms about size, this thing is BIG. It's heavy when loaded and it will make the smaller framed person have to stop and rest on a long walk through an airport, or wobble under the weight. So, if that's an issue, get a thin briefcase or get a smaller size. It also will have issues fitting under an airline seat. You've got to break it in in order to fit it under a seat. Before it's soft, it's pretty stiff and requires some good use to break it in. So, those warnings are in order. I am 6'3", 230 pounds and can handle one, and I love it. I call it the elephant and it's the best quality piece of gear I've owned and I have had a few really great leather articles (an 80s Reunion Blues electric bass gig bag etc...) So, whatever you've heard, it's true - these things are monsters and are built to just keep on going. After a year of use of mine, it's still got a ways to go to even look used... So, I personally feel it's worth every dime. Their customer service is great too. I had a broken rivet and they were all over themselves fixing things and I really feel they stand behind their products and their guarantee. AL
