Product Overview

This Beast Leather Duffle Bag was designed for the Munson family. When we travel to Africa or other faraway places, we usually take four of these leather duffle bags, two leather suitcases and two cheap-o suitcases that we fill full of clothes and leave there, for our luggage. It is plain and simple with no breakable parts like zippers, wheels, snaps or buttons and built with as few seams as possible because seams are where all duffle bags start falling apart. Therefore, there are only two really big pieces of leather with a solid piece sewn on each end. And we sew the leather at only 5 stitches per inch so there's more leather between the needle holes and fewer holes to start a tear. The sewing machine is a perforation machine if the stitches are too close together. And every part that gets stress is reinforced at stress points with rivets and hidden polyester straps. Polyester is good and bad. The good part is that it lasts forever. The bad part is that it lasts forever and never decomposes. Polyester bedding makes you sleep bad. Polyester straps make your leather duffle bag last really long.

Cows are waterproof, right? It's because the top part of their hide has tightly woven together fibers. The skin has all of the grain still there (Full Grain). No scars have been shaved or sanded off to leave only a little bit of the grain there (Top Grain). Therefore, it's the strongest cow leather there is and that's what we use. And we use thick full-grain. It's then lined with pigskin, which is tougher than the cowskin. Our custom 316 Stainless Steel hardware is amazing (please please google it). It's the metal of choice when your life depends on it. The thread is strangely strong industrial marine grade UV resistant polyester thread. And thick. There's no other leather duffle bag that will last as long as this one.

I designed it to be versatile. Buckled smaller at the first hole to be smaller or expanded way out jam-packed, buckled at the last hole. The dimensions are ideal to be able to fill it up and be around a 50 lb. limit. You could fit a dead body in it, like a deer or wild hog or something. This beast of a leather duffle bag is for big travel where a lesser man's luggage just won't do. I know you could get one with wheels (that will soon break) but why? Get this and add a little exercise into your day. Seriously, don't be afraid of using your muscles. It's good for you.

    Backpack straps or bust

I've had the older design of this bag for around five years now. I can't imagine owning and using this bag without the backpack straps. Unless you pack it with pillows, I honestly can't imagine someone carrying this with just one handle. It's 12lbs EMPTY. Filling this with enough volume to consider it "full" this bag (for me) would weight around 50-55lbs. That's a bit extreme to call it a duffel and carry it as such. Unless you use it as a trunk for storage in your car, or in your home, I have a hard time believing someone could use this as a duffel. I took this thing through airports and without a cart (or the awesome backpack straps) it would have been a PAIN to lug around.

Don't get me wrong, it's a beautiful bag. Well designed, well made. Compliments everywhere. I'm glad I have it. I just wouldn't want to use it if I didn't have the backpack straps. That's the only reason this design gets 4 stars. I would give MY design 5 stars, because the backpack straps make this a very useable and gorgeous bag.

    Great but....

Build quality, style and capacity are all fabulous. But I bought - my own fault entirely - having looked at the bag numerous times in its previous style. I find that the single handle on the top doesn't suit the rugged style and that the shape of the bag doesn't hold up well when the bag isn't packed full or strapped very tightly. Sadly I'll probably sell it on.

    Bag is as expected. Old

Bag is as expected. Old school thick leather. Nice hardware. It would be nice if it had a storage bag.

More than a decade with my beast

This bag is legendary. Doormen, Bellhops and luggage handlers have complimented the caliber of these bags (beast, waterbag and accoutrements) on many occasions with reverence. These bags are right at home in “World Class” surroundings or the rodeo grounds. They wear like hardened steel. Never a tear, pull or failure of any sort. The belt holes don’t even show much wear. You literally cannot go wrong with anything they offer at Saddleback. IAFF member approved.
