The Munson Last - A Shoe Shaped To Mimic A Barefoot Step

It has been nearly 90 years since a shoe shaped like ours has been offered for sale since no one else has had a sculpted last that so perfectly and comfortably shapes to the form of the foot. Ours is based on the 1st and 2nd of the 6 generations of the Munson Last that was created from 1908 to 1912 by Dr. Munson and his Shoe Board to fix all of the foot problems in the U.S. Military.

Because of its asymmetrical shape and the swing to one side, it was terribly difficult and time consuming to build and so the orthopedic nature of it was dumbed down for ease of manufacturing in the later generations. We only found one small family run shop in Italy whose old patriarch could show his shoemakers how to make our shoe like they used to. Our Tight and Pure Materials

With this full leather, synthetic-free shoe, our intention was to design and build the highest quality shoe in the world. Whether or not we achieved it, we'll never know, but we do not know how someone could build a shoe to last longer. Each Officer’s Boot is made with only full-grain, vegetable tanned Italian leather which is arguably one of the tightest fibered leathers we could buy.

From the most durable military grade eyelets and hooks to the thick slabs of leather used for the insole and outsole, every component was chosen for durability, comfort, and to be easily re-soled over and over again. Each pair of Officer’s Boots is handmade in a small workshop in Italy, where shoemaking is an art form passed down through generations and where the culture of quality is alive and well. Distinguished Design

Not many boots are complimented by strangers 100 years after they were designed. That doesn't happen because of one or two design details. That is the result of the sum of dozens of small choices for the weight of the design in one area over another, the height and shape of the toe or the distance the sole sticks out from beneath the body. It was designed to be versatile, to be worn in battle and in ceremonies and nothing has changed. Most 'my first big boy starter' boots look great right out of the box, but are hard to keep looking great without a lot of effort. Ours were designed to look great right at the start and all the way up to the end.

The English Tan color was not just painted on, but was the exact color we knew we wanted, one that would age with just the right rich tone and effect. The natural base color was expertly developed by tanning it with the exact right mix of two different tannins that age to give it a rich orangish red tone tan instead of a mustardish yellow tan. Love my boots

I am a shoe hound and had to have these. Was skeptical at first since these are sized for men but I was wrong!! So comfy and each time I wear them they feel cozier for my feet even with bunions. I bought English Tan and looking forward to the change to patina!! Highly recommend!!

Amazing!

Review: Just received the boots so I will follow up after a few months. Bottom Line: Amazing! 1. Shipping was fast and flawless. 2. Packaging is perfect, even including travel sleeves and a personalized thank you written on a piece of leather! 3. Design is unlike anything I have ever seen. I am not someone who appreciates design, but these look like top-tier dress shoes. 4. Material and workmanship is flawless. The thick leather soles are molded perfectly. Not one stich out of place or thread hanging off the stitching. 5. Sizing is perfect, I have really wide feet and foot injuries from years of Army Road Marches and don't have any pain points in the shoes. 6. Value was a big concern for me, I don't ordinarily get anything like this for myself, but it looks like this shoe will last years and years. Lifetime cost per year is probably half a pair of modern boots and they look better. Can't imagine being more impressed with shoes out of the box; between the perfect fit, quality materials, design and build I can't see a weakness. I'll follow up after break-in but don't anticipate any issues. NOTE: I have never written a review this good, so I was looking for a flaw closely and just couldn't find one.

First pair of Premium Boots!

These were my first ever purchase of boots that I would consider Premium Tier, and while I had concerns, Saddleback delivered and then some! My boots were certainly snug (Brannock size was my reference), but Saddleback also has the online chat and they responded VERY promptly and were very helpful in answering my questions. The materials are some of the best, the leather smell was exactly as I expected, and the more I wear these boots, the better they feel. I can easily imagine these fitting like a glove after a few months of wear, and Dave Munson's YouTube videos did these boots all the justice they deserve! Can't say whether or not they make pain go away, but I do have a bunion on my left foot that is making that boot just a little uncomfortable when the boots first go on in the morning, but after just a few attempts, I learned about how tight the laces needed to be in order to give that 'like a glove' feel without painful rubbing. The leather sole is an interesting choice, have rarely seen those in today's world where hard rubber lug soles are very common, and I have yet to wear them in wet conditions, but as long as there is some texture on the ground, I feel safe wearing them. Wet textured ground won't be a concern for me, but I think my first real test will be coming inside after walking on wet ground into smooth surfaces like marble or concrete. While they are not a "do it all" type of boot, these certainly make me stand just a little straighter and I don't regret the purchase at all. Next up, Raven Black!
