Product Overview

This Mountainback® Indiana Canvas Satchel is an extremely durable and long lasting bag with a 100-year warranty. It is made of a thick, 24 oz. canvas that is woven very tightly. The fabric is treated with a wax that makes it water-resistant and helps to protect it from wear and tear. These canvas satchel bags feature custom, hardcore hand-pounded solid copper saddle rivets, a full grain tumbled leather exterior and an interior back pocket. It has an adjustable strap length of 38"-61" and dimensions of (W x H x D) 11" x 11" x 3.5".

Why We Chose This Waxed Canvas

Waxed canvas is an extremely super water resistant material. If we say waterproof, then the kind of guy who makes toast on the edge of his bath will sue us. The wax shields the cotton fibers from getting damaged, so the high-quality canvas lasts longer and protects your items. It ages and weathers to look really great over time. It is a classic fabric created by the sailors of the North Sea to keep dry on and off the ships. If you just climbed out of a frozen river sopping wet, you could immediately cut off strips of the cotton canvas satchel to use as a long lasting firestarter in extreme conditions.

The Canvas Quality

I asked the Scot who makes this fabric if they're the best in the world at making it. He told me, "I wouldn't say we're the best, but I don't know anybody who does it better." Here is why it's the most durable, longest lasting canvas satchel in the world.

24 oz is uncommonly thick (1 sq. yard weighs 24 oz when the standard is 18 oz or less). The cotton has long fibers and therefore require very few joints to make a yarn. Each thread is made up of 5 individual yarns, while most canvas this thick has only 3 or 4. This means it's denser and stronger. It is woven extremely tight, warp and weft, so even thorns have a tough time passing through. The die of the fabric is the good stuff. The wax is as good as it gets, excessively refined, soaking to the core and staying around.

Our Not Insignificant Other Materials

Our custom and very expensive 316 Stainless Steel hardware is super strong. Our shoulder strap clasps can hold up to a 750 lb. bag of cats before it breaks. And we have two clasps per bag. It's the metal of choice for when your life depends on it.

The full grain tumbled leather has three purposes. 1. To help give the bag form. 2. To protect the canvas. 3. To make it comfortable to carry against your side.

Our thread is as strong as we could find-- thick industrial marine grade UV resistant polyester thread. Sun doesn't tear it down like it does Nylon.

Each of our rivets is an expensive hard core hand pounded solid copper saddle rivet with a leather interior washer to keep it from going through. We didn't mess around.

Functionality Of These Canvas Satchel Bags

It's all-around simple. There's a tumbled leather exterior and interior back pocket. The entire interior is lined with super soft but durable tumbled leather. What's really cool though, is that you can pull the liner inside-out to make it easier to clean out, like if you spill salsa in it or something. That's not the only purpose of the liner though. I designed it with a very discreet slit cut into the bottom of it so that you can hide things in between the liner and the canvas bag itself.

Be Sure To Check Out Our Vintage Canvas Messenger Bag

Our Mountainback waxed canvas bags do not end here. We have a few others, including really cool vintage-looking canvas messenger bags. These shoulder bags can hold a 16" MacBook or laptop in a case and they have a full grain leather interior lining and several pockets. Whether you choose our canvas messenger bag or the Indiana Canvas Satchel, I am sure it will meet your needs for a sturdy, durable, and still elegant canvas bag.

The Terrorist Bedtime Story Continued from the Slim Briefcase page

It was a dark place. Everyone was nervous, even Omar's brother, Ali. As we slowly wandered the streets of this remote African village, our captain would disappear now and then into a small thatched roof hut or stop to talk quietly with one of the elders of the village. We just tried to be as friendly as usual and waved and smiled to everybody. Smiles broke out most everytime we smiled big or said something in Swahili. If I said I was just uncomfortable, that would be like trying on my jeans from high school and saying that they were a tad tight. We needed to get out of there, and so that's what we did.

Later that night, back at Mike's Camp, Omar, the Islamic prophet and angel, and I talked for about 5 hours until after midnight about God, nature and the moon and about how a person can have strong supernatural peace and inexpressible joy and a deep love in their life that is beyond understanding, even during storms. I knew that if Omar were to ever start that close friendship with God, there would be a huge shake up in that region because everyone knows and respects, and listens to him.

I finally said goodnight and went to our thatched roof hut to go to bed and found Suzette praying. We talked for a bit, and then I fell asleep. She didn't. After about 45 minutes, Suzette shook me hard awake and said, "We need to pray RIGHT NOW!!! There was thick blackness in the room like we had never experienced. No light whatsoever. We could no longer even see our hands in front of our faces or the stars through the entire wall of big glassless windows. There was a heavy evil presence all around us.

We prayed and rebuked the spirits as best as we knew how. I mean, we threw it all out there. "You leave now! You have no rights! Get away from us! In Jesus name I throw, cast, kick, punch, order you out of here!" I mean, we left no Christian phrase unused. And since we could text from there, but didn't have internet, we sent texts to family and friends to pray for our protection. And after about 2 hours the darkness lifted and we could see the stars through the big huge window holes again. And that wonderful peace returned.

I know this sounds like crazy talk to some, but I'm just telling you what happened. Surely there could be an explanation for all of the blackness, even though it was dry season and there was not a cloud in the sky, and the stars shone brightly. But there was a heaviness in our spirits and we sensed an unmistakable strong evil. Now I'm not a highly emotional sensationalist, but I witnessed what I witnessed, and we are happy I'm able to write you this story today.

As soon as we got back to Lamu, I checked the Department of State's Travel warnings for the area and found that they strongly advised against any travel to Lamu County because of the terrorist killings and kidnappings of Al-Shabaab. Lesson learned. Always check the Department of State's website for travel warnings, even though friends say you'll love it. To read the first part of this story, go to The Flight Bag Page

    My Girl Bag!

I had been looking at the Indiana Satchel for a while, but always afraid it would be heavy. So when the Mountainback came back in stock....ding...ding...ding! I thought this could work! And work it has. I love it! I love that I can get into it quickly....I love that handle...I love the HUGE slab of leather on the back; my phone lives there...I love the size (I can even put my laptop in it; although it doesn't close then...but I don't care...I love it! I even love the smell of the waxed canvas...I know weird...but hey this bag is an all around perfect Girl Bag for me! YES LADIES...It isn't just for the boys! Try it, you will not be disappointed!

The strap hardware wasn’t very well thought out.

The clips on the strap tend to unhook themselves when you set the bag down and pick it up again if the clips get twisted. Had to spend a lot of time and money to solve the issue. That’s how annoying the problem was. Not exaggerating at all. Seems like an awfully inflated price for something that isn’t perfect. I like the bag quite a bit, but, the frustration of this issue, and the sheer difficulty of fixing it has been frustrating. It would literally unhook itself unless I was very deliberate in how I picked it up. I couldn’t find anything smaller than the ridiculously oversized shackle/swivel combo. But, at least it WORKS. Extremely disappointed with the strap.

    Awesome wee shoulder bag, very

Awesome wee shoulder bag, very sturdy, the empty weight is an indication of the strength or the construction materials, made to last. I love it, and my wifey thinks the style and colour are a great match for me. I like how I don’t have to fiddle with a buckle to get it open, the one handed closure is brilliant.
Plus the company owner used to drive a land cruiser and had been to New Zealand, I’m a kiwi who loves Land-cruisers and I wanted a sweet as bag! So it was meant to be!
