Read MoreThis is the 4th Edition of the Squared Leather Backpack and has been refined over the years to what it is now. You'll see old pictures with a fat flat handle, but the new one is high and thinner. And it's still over-engineered. It has no breakable parts like buttons, magnets, or zippers and it's still reinforced with rivets through and hidden polyester strapping at all stress points. In addition, this newest edition of this leather backpack is made from only two large solid pieces of leather instead of three, which means that there are fewer seams on this backpack to tear apart. This leather backpack has a laptop pocket on the front exterior and one in the back that can fit a 17" laptop. Both tall side pockets have a hidden pocket behind them for quick access or for sticking in longer things. The lower and side d-rings on the backpack are great for securing on tripods, blankets, and or dirty and wet shoes. The shoulder straps are minimal, but with a comfortable and adjustable shoulder pad to distribute the backpack's weight where you need it.
---Full-grain leather is the strongest and most water-resistant leather you can use for a backpack, and we use the thick version of it. Like boot leather, but a tad thicker. Then we line it with pigskin, which is tougher than cow leather. Finally, we sew the leather backpack together with a very expensive German industrial marine-grade polyester thread that doesn't deteriorate in the sun as nylon thread does. The hardware is our custom 316 Stainless Steel hardware. I believe we are the only company in the world using such strong hardware to make a leather backpack. The buckles can hold up to a 750 lb. bag of cats without breaking. It's kind of like killing a fly with a shotgun, but I tell you this, you'll never have a problem with hardware breaking on your backpack. If it does break, it'll either be an excellent story or an unfortunate one.
---There are many advantages of a leather backpack. Let us start with a full grain leather bag will develop a beautiful patina over time and tell your story. The more you use this backpack, the better it looks. This will also protect your belongings from the elements better than some synthetic material. Full grain is the most water-resistant, so a little rain won't hurt it. That's what you get with high quality leather goods. Another significant advantage of our Squared Leather Backpack is that it's virtually impossible to tear.
---This Tank of a backpack is not for the faint of heart. It's big but not pretentious, and it's built to last. This is the one if you're searching for a leather backpack that will allow you to haul around your 17-inch laptop and gear easily. It's also perfect for traveling as it fits everything you need.
---You should not have problems getting through TSA with this as your carry-on backpack. It's a perfect size and has plenty of room for everything you need while still being small enough not to be a pain. This is an excellent backpack for a fun weekend trip, or work trip, with enough room for your laptop plus maybe a change of clothes, and whatever other gear you might need.
As a detective I needed something rugged for the streets but to look good for the office and court. This is the bag. When it came I was like whoaaa , much bigger than expected. Wish it was a little smaller but I am definitely using the space.. Great buy

Just got my black Square and have been a long time SBL customer. Something seems...off...with this leather now. Seems thinner and more.."commericial". Not sure what exactly it is. Not necessarily a bad thing. Just different. However, if it is thinner that seems cheaper to me, esp. given the price hikes. Also, SBL is not including padded straps nor the removable, interior divider as seen on earlier version. Higher price. Less leather. Someone is counting beans over there and driving this company's product in the wrong directdion. -) this is a very nice cover. I do wish it was just a bit longer so it would fit rhodia large notebooks. I'm just not a very big fan of moleskines choice of paper. Anyone that's tried to write with a fountain pen on moleskines paper knows what I mean. Although this has nothing at all to do with this awesome cover! I like the large size so much I just now ordered the small version. I know lots of companies that make 3.5x5.5 size notebooks. Nice job Dave but just know moleskine paper isn't what it used to be.

A few weeks ago I ordered and received one of the mountain back bags (medium gear bag) and I was so impressed that I found myself looking at the website daily for my next purchases. I found this bag on Dave's Deals at 25% off. I have looked over the entire bag and I have no idea why it was marked down. Looks amazing! My only issue so far is that I would like to be able to remove the straps to be stowed inside the bag if needed. The straps can be undone and released on the bottom but not the top. I have seen other similiar bags, that have a slit cut in the top of the bag, so the straps can be slid into the bag for storage. If I ever feel the need, or get brave enough, I may do it myself. Also, I was watching some of the videos on the bag and it looks like it used to come with padded straps, not sure why the style changed but I am sure it was for a reason. I was a little disappointed because the padded straps look like they would be very comfortable. But overall, a beautiful bag.

Traveled by train from Salt Lake City to Truckee, CA. Everything I needed was stowed nicely in my Squared Backpack. I recently ran out of my stash of Dave's business cards - still had 4 people take down website info after seeing my Squared walking around town! More business cards are headed my way - much easier to pass out the cards to interested folks.

Okay, I'm not even going to mention the leather quality. You wouldn't be reading this if you had second thoughts on that. I absolutley love this backpack. It rocks. Yes, it is heavier than than a normal backpack, yes the leather is tough and will need some breaking in and yes it can take a little bit of extra time to undo the buckles when compared to a click system. But, as my Gran always used to say "all good things come to those that wait". Essentially, this is a backpack that will take everything that you throw at it, and then ask for more. I've only had it for a short period of time, but on a three day trip to Melbourne and then down to Tasmania it took all that I had to offer. Granted, I wouldn't take it on long hikes, but for short travelling trips it is awesome. Don't buy this bag, or any saddleback leather for an ego trip, that's the wrong reason. But, be prepared to receive compliments. As I alighted a taxi in Launceston I heard a wife say to her husband "that's a cool bag, I wonder where that's from". Of course, I told them about the best leather company in the whole wide world.
