Read MoreThis is the 4th Edition of the Squared Leather Backpack and has been refined over the years to what it is now. You'll see old pictures with a fat flat handle, but the new one is high and thinner. And it's still over-engineered. It has no breakable parts like buttons, magnets, or zippers and it's still reinforced with rivets through and hidden polyester strapping at all stress points. In addition, this newest edition of this leather backpack is made from only two large solid pieces of leather instead of three, which means that there are fewer seams on this backpack to tear apart. This leather backpack has a laptop pocket on the front exterior and one in the back that can fit a 17" laptop. Both tall side pockets have a hidden pocket behind them for quick access or for sticking in longer things. The lower and side d-rings on the backpack are great for securing on tripods, blankets, and or dirty and wet shoes. The shoulder straps are minimal, but with a comfortable and adjustable shoulder pad to distribute the backpack's weight where you need it.
---Full-grain leather is the strongest and most water-resistant leather you can use for a backpack, and we use the thick version of it. Like boot leather, but a tad thicker. Then we line it with pigskin, which is tougher than cow leather. Finally, we sew the leather backpack together with a very expensive German industrial marine-grade polyester thread that doesn't deteriorate in the sun as nylon thread does. The hardware is our custom 316 Stainless Steel hardware. I believe we are the only company in the world using such strong hardware to make a leather backpack. The buckles can hold up to a 750 lb. bag of cats without breaking. It's kind of like killing a fly with a shotgun, but I tell you this, you'll never have a problem with hardware breaking on your backpack. If it does break, it'll either be an excellent story or an unfortunate one.
---There are many advantages of a leather backpack. Let us start with a full grain leather bag will develop a beautiful patina over time and tell your story. The more you use this backpack, the better it looks. This will also protect your belongings from the elements better than some synthetic material. Full grain is the most water-resistant, so a little rain won't hurt it. That's what you get with high quality leather goods. Another significant advantage of our Squared Leather Backpack is that it's virtually impossible to tear.
---This Tank of a backpack is not for the faint of heart. It's big but not pretentious, and it's built to last. This is the one if you're searching for a leather backpack that will allow you to haul around your 17-inch laptop and gear easily. It's also perfect for traveling as it fits everything you need.
---You should not have problems getting through TSA with this as your carry-on backpack. It's a perfect size and has plenty of room for everything you need while still being small enough not to be a pain. This is an excellent backpack for a fun weekend trip, or work trip, with enough room for your laptop plus maybe a change of clothes, and whatever other gear you might need.
I don't like readin long reviews, so I'll keep this short. Got my Squared Backpack in walnut yesterday, and it looks awesome! The bag is large, but it fits what I regularly carry daily (I didn't realize I carried that much stuff) nicely. Truthfully, the bag fits my 6'3, 225 frame perfectly. I'd read reviews discussing declining attention to detail and craftsmanship with the bags. Mine has no such problems. I received the padded straps with the bag (pleasant surprise). Add in the free wallet for Father's Day, and the 15% discount for military (thanks Saddleback) and this is a purchase I don't regret for a second. I'm done wasting $250 on bags that won't last and aren't made well. Saddleback is the way to go.

I want to give a shout out to Meredith of SBL Customer Service. I just chatted with her about the padded sleeves for the squared backpack. (I bought a Dave's Deal in tobacco a few months back. It didn't come with the sleeves.) When I asked about the cost of buying a pair, she offered to send them to me FREE OF CHARGE. Not only does SBL craft quality products, they empower their CSR's to make decisions without having to seek a supervisor's approval. SBL is a great company with great people who provide great service.

Great design. The leather is great on the inside but feels like plastic on the outside.

I've been a huge fan of Saddleback for years - this is my third bag. I've used the messenger bag daily for over four years and use the dry bag for a camera bag. Love both bags to death. I picked this up because I didn't have a proper backpack - which is probably the only reason why my wife doesn't have me sleeping on the couch after buying another Saddleback bag. This bag is not lined with that kind of rugged hard, resistant pig skin from my messenger bag four years ago. This "Natura Pigskin" is like a suede velvet type leather. While soft to the touch, it gets ugly stains when it comes into contact with leather conditioner - or honestly, anything that may spill in your bag. I don't doubt that it is still rugged, but with prices having been hiked, I'm left a little disappointed. Again, beautiful bag and exactly what I have come to expect from Saddleback aside from this caveat.

I've owned (and still own) most of the backpacks (Simple Canvas Pack, Front Pocket Backpack, Simple Backpack, Thin Front Pocket Backpack). I've found the Square Backpack (SBP) to be most comfortable for college use carrying a laptop/charger safely/comfortably, textbooks, paper, binders, calculator(s), pens/pencils, etc. It distributes its weight evenly across the back (unlike the Front Pocket Backpack in Medium). I do get compliments regularly on this bag and I can definitely say this bag will last you quite some time due to it's rugged build quality. My favorite feature is the large side pockets and the ability to tuck stuff behind them when I'm out on the run and not having to unbuckle the main pockets. The reinforced handle with support bar underneath is a great feature considering I do have to take the Square Backpack on and off throughout the day. If you're on the fence about getting one, stop torturing yourself. Buy once, cry once.
