Design of the Full Grain Leather Briefcase

This full-grain leather briefcase is over-engineered in that it has no breakable parts. No magnets, zippers, buttons, or snaps; this briefcase is reinforced with rivets and hidden polyester strapping wherever there is stress. Leather stretches over time, and we didn't want that to happen. So it's designed with the fewest and biggest pieces of leather that make sense. This briefcase can be converted into backpack mode if you need your hands free. It fits all 17" laptops with a ton of room to spare for everything else you need to carry (within reason, for those thinking they could fit their acoustic guitar in here).

Materials in Our Leather Briefcases

The materials in our leather briefcase are full grain leather, pigskin lining, 316 stainless steel hardware, and German industrial marine-grade polyester thread. Our leather is tough and resilient, and our pigskin lining is super strong. Our hardware is 316 stainless steel and is rated to hold up to 750 lbs. Our thread is UV-resistant and German industrial marine-grade polyester thread. In addition, our hidden reinforcing straps ensure that the bag will never stretch and those straps will never deteriorate.

Full Grain Leather is key to a Perfect Leather Bag

Natural Full Grain Leather is the key to a quality leather briefcase. The grain of the hide is like the shingles on a roof. If you take off the top part of the leather (grain) it's like taking the shingles off of the roof. They get rid of the toughest and most resistant layer of the hide. Here's why there are so many cheap leather briefcases out there.

When the tannery gets a leather hide from the slaughterhouse, it's really thick. So, the tannery splits the top half with the grain from the bottom half. Now they have two hides to sell. The tough and beasty hide that still has the full amount of grain (full grain) is expensive, and that's what we buy. The low quality bottom half is great for making low quality budget leather briefcases or laptop bags that will dry out and fall apart in a short time. They may look great, but the leather doesn't have any grain, though they have made it to look great.

The Lining of the Leather Briefcase

We glue and sew tough, strong, pigskin leather to the cow leather. And the pigskin is even stronger than the cowskin. We've chosen this instead of using a shiny pretty fabric lining. We want all of our real leather bags to be durable, rugged, and sturdy. Our leather bags are built to look cool, classy and have the durability to outlast you with a 100 year warranty.

The Best Full Grain Leather Briefcase Hardware

Our custom hardware is 316 Stainless Steel. If you are a metallurgist, then I'm sure you just gasped. It's the metal you want to be used when your life depends on it. The testing laboratory told us that our clips were rated to hold up to 750 lbs.

Thread That Doesn't Fall Apart

And if all of that isn't enough, our thread is unbelievably strong and UV resistant German industrial marine-grade polyester thread. It doesn't deteriorate when the sun hits it like nylon thread does. And we use the thick Double Ought version of it. It's the same thread used on ship sails and parachutes (things your life depends on).

Hidden Reinforcing Straps

Polyester is good and bad. The good is that it doesn't stretch and never deteriorates. The bad is that it never deteriorates. When it comes to polyester in your sheets and blankets, you won't sleep as well. But, when it comes to polyester straps sewn into the stress points of a bag, it's the best there is to get that extra strength.

Backpack Feature

Our leather briefcase converts into a laptop backpack with a shoulder strap with two shoulder pads. Clip one end of the strap onto a d-ring on the bottom, run the strap through the o-ring, and clip it to the opposite side and you've got yourself a backpack. This makes it super easy and super comfortable to carry your laptop and all other gear and accessories as you would with larger full grain leather messenger bags.

Removable Side Straps

You can remove the side straps for use as an emergency size 36 full grain leather belt, tie-down, or tourniquet (hopefully you won't need that). But on the bag, they are great for holding wet umbrellas and blueprint tubes to the top of the flap.

D-Rings on the Bottom

The d-rings are designed to strap on blankets, dirty boots, and fly rod tubes. They can hold some serious weight and keep them from slipping off the side of the bag.

Leather Briefcase with a Secret Compartment

There is a hidden flap on the bottom of this leather briefcase for hiding passports, extra cash, your collection of rubies, or whatever else you don't want anyone to know about. This false bottom can be a lifesaver in itself.

Removable Shoulder Strap

. The removable shoulder strap is a handy feature. You can take it off your briefcase to tie the Christmas tree to the rack of your car. The strap on this briefcase is as tough and durable as our quality full grain leather belts.

Extra Hole to Fill it Up

And just a small detail in the craftsmanship, the main center strap has a hole all the way at the tip for closing when your laptop bag is really overstuffed. This gives you that much extra space in your real Leather Briefcase.

Pockets in these Leather Briefcases

There is a pocket on the side, a pocket on the back, and pockets on the inside. From a place for your pens to a spot for your wallet in case you lose your pants. With two main compartments inside, you can take two laptops if need be, with room for chargers and accessories. These quality leather briefcases will protect your belongings.

Built like a brick...house. The medium is perfect for my frame. Not at all heavy.

Got this after shamelessly pining for it in front of the wife. The bag certainly lived up to the expectations. Now 3 days old it has a few scuffs already. In that short time, this is what I've learned. First, at 5ft 8in, 170lbs, I wondered if the Med would be too small and look like a man-purse. Not at all. Much bigger than any murse I've seen and built like a brick ah..house. Second, it's got a bit of heft. But after packing 15lbs worth of junk on the way home from work, you think I notice a difference between bags? Nope. I packed this bag to the gills and felt less strain on my flimsy shoulder than I did with the canvas bag I'd been using with half that weight. The shoulder pad spreads weight across the shoulder nicely. Lastly, you'll feel the shame of having such a fine piece of leather on the arm while other bags use leather that looks like the vinyl on a hotel headboard. A sweet bag and doubtfully the last you'll ever need. Go for it, you won't be sorry.

    Thoroughly Impressed.

My Classic Briefcase arrived and is in aggressive field use. I have another leather briefcase from another manufacturer dating from the "dawn of time" that sports high-quality leather ⅔ the thickness. It's been re-stitched and restored. The latter's design does not meet my newer requirements. Saddleback's does and is built (cleaned up for Internet!) "Like a brick Out-House." Your videos should be a "Must Watch" for anyone considering placing an order. "Knock Off a Saddleback Briefcase" and "Midnight Three & Six." The latter brought my day / world to a dead cold stop and presented an opportunity to Reflect on What Matters - an opportunity that easily would've otherwise been lost. If your knock-off briefcase competitors don't put you out of business before the new year, I look forward to another order. BTW, the "Personal Bible Verses of Salvation Assurance Comfort" found under the false bottom was well-received!

    Large Chestnut Classic

I've wanted to live with my large Chestnut bag for 6 months or so before writing a review. Bought it as a Dave Deal with 25% off...even now I still don't see why... this bag has lead to several other SB purchases including 2 medium waterbags and side pocket duffel....get used to the compliments when traveling or just walking to your car..no issues with it as a personal item when flying..holds effortlessly my company laptop, folders, eye glass case, even my lunch box! I might have been able to squeeze into the medium classic but the large offers the flexibility to carry a change of clothes if needed. Well done SB!

If John Wayne Owned A Briefcase....

...this would be it! It's rugged, luxurious, smells like Western movie, built like things used to and still should be. It holds my Macbook Pro, files, fancy pen, keys, and more. Wearing it makes you feel rugged, and makes you look like a million well organized dollars. I cannot wait to take this on MANY overseas trips and see how it wears, the scars it will carry. And for the record.....I love supporting a great company run by just darned good people. Can't wait to get a few more items from Dave and Linda!

    One happy customer

I almost ordered the XL, but opted for the Large after watching the size comparison video and I'm glad I did because the large is very large. Almost too large as a daily use work briefcase. I probably should've ordered the (large) Thin Front Pocket Briefcase for my laptop, notebook and various cords and cables. Still, after years of fawning over these bags I finally own one and I love it. Seriously, though; after I opened the box and started loading up the bag I overheard my kids (3 teenagers, 1 girl/2 boys) arguing over who gets it when "dad no longer needs it." Thanks, Saddleback Leather! Now I have to sleep with my door locked...
