Read MoreAfter years of searching for the perfect Saddleback mug, Dave finally decided to just design one himself. The final product is a collaboration with the master potter Keith Thomson, owner of Firehouse Pottery just across town here in Fort Worth, TX. Keith makes each Saddleback mug by himself, by hand. There's about 20 or so discrete processes involved in the creation of each mug, from measuring out the right sized hunk of clay, to forming it on the pottery wheel, to final touch ups of each finished mug. They're made in small batches over a 2 week period. There are quicker and easier ways to make mugs, but Keith isn't interested in that. And neither is Dave. The result is a beautiful hand-crafted mug, each slightly unique. Because of the time-consuming and labor-intensive process, Keith just isn't able to make too many of these things.
Ugggggggh! This is the 1st time ive rated a SBL product less than 5 stars. I have been a loyal SBL customer for many years. I am a coffee addict. I am also a hand thrown stone mug junkie. I have many. The bigger the better. The heavier the better. I like them weapon quality. I have heard for years about the SBL mugs. People brag about them selling out very fast. Dave has bragged about their handmade quality for years. Just recently i ordered 2. Heres the good: -they are quintessential SBL! The logo is dead on. Its dark tobacco. The script is quite the match for being handwritten. The green color is reminiscent of the no longer available Mountainback canvas line. However, i have 2 Indiana satchels in green canvas, the original with old bull leather and the 2nd version with the tumbled leather. I am very certain i bought the last canvas Indiana satchel sold by SBL. DAVE - WE NEED MORE MOUNTAINBACK CANVAS!!! -i love seeing both mugs on my coffee bar. I'll look at my coffee bar from across the room just to see the mugs and the SBL logo. -everytime i drink from them, i imagine its Dave feeding me coffee. Not just any Dave but the Dave with a pet turkey on his lap. The Dave filming a catepillar inching its way across his safari tent's deck as the sun rises. The Dave who built his own leather coffin and displays it in a showroom to remind everyone of his and their own mortality. The Dave who narrated his own life story's book. The Dave I hound on every IG post to make a custom leather cover for his book and threaten to not read the last chapter until its covered in SBL tobacco leather with copper rivets and a strap closure with a single hole. Yeah, that Dave. I know. Its creepy. But its SBL. Its a niche, it builds niche leather products. SBL has niche clientele. Ive seen other SBL clientele. We arent all that normal. So feed me coffee, Dave! Now, here's the bad: -the quality control suffers. The 2 mugs i got at the same time are radically different in size. I might expect different sizes from year to year but these are from the same batch. -the wall thickness is thinner than any other stone mug i have. They definitely arent weapon quality. -the handles are flat and thin. They feel like its only a matter of time till they break off. I'd kill to have these mugs with no handles, even though they are thinner walled than i'd like. -the paint around the logo is sloppy. I'm not sure how the artist was so meticulous with the script and then said screw it with straight lines around the logo. I might buy another if it was handle-less but as long as they come with the bad listed above, i wont buy another. DAVE - WHERE'S MY BOOK COVER ??????????????

I've been waiting years to get this coffee mug and it is quite simply the best coffee mug. The outside is not glazed, but rather matte and non-slippery when wet. The inside and lip are glazed and smooth, great feel when drinking. The size is slightly larger than a normal coffee mug with a fantastic handle. I have large hands and can fit three fingers through the loop. The top of the handle is angled downward which makes it really ergonomic...somehow it feels better in-hand. I checked to see if this was for sale on a whim, as I've done for years, and jumped on the chance to buy it. Some other reviewers have mentioned that it's expensive for a coffee mug, but it's actually cheaper than a similar Black Rifle Coffee mug and roughly the same price as a Death Wish Coffee mug. You're getting a handcrafted, American-made product...it's not cheap. Thanks again, Saddleback!

Can’t own just one Another Thanksgiving rolls in and whamo! I see the elusive wonder mug is again being offered to the world. I am limited to just one but I embrace the season and walk away grateful to once again have the opportunity to add another one of these magical mugs to my collection.

Let's be honest, most of the coffee mugs will be bought because they are a cool piece of our beloved Saddleback Leather accoutrement. And this is fine. My mug sits proudly on my desk top announcing "Yes, this guy has style, even class". The mug is handmade with all the little foibles and personality one would expect. The colors aren't consistent from one batch to another, the logo is just slightly tantalizingly askew (picture Vivien Leigh when she raises that right eyebrow). I wouldn't have it any other way. Besides, if you're reading this review (and you are, I see you there) you are already on the hook. Get the damn mug. Tell 'em Brian sent you.

I love my coffee mug! But I do find it overpriced. By the time you add shipping and tax it’s not worth $60.
