Read MoreThis is the 2nd edition of the Thin Front Pocket Leather Backpack with a few changes that I think you'll love. The original backpack was everyone's favorite, and we rarely got a complaint. Still, I made some slight changes that may be overkill, but they're more consistent with our lowest possible seam-feet approach to design.
---This slim leather backpack is still built without breakable parts like zippers, magnets, velcro, or snaps. It is still reinforced at all stress points with hidden polyester straps and strong rivets. At Saddleback Leather Co, we build full grain leather designs that stand the test of time. Breakable parts are things you find in a department store backpack, not here.
---The body of this slim leather backpack is still only built with two big solid pieces of leather, but now all three front pockets of the backpack are all made of just one solid piece of leather. You see, the fewer seams a leather backpack has, the fewer seams there are to start a rip. And not only that, but we only allow 5 stitches per inch of our seams, so there is more leather between holes and, therefore, fewer holes to start a tear. I once interviewed a second-generation sailmaker in New Zealand. He referred to a sewing machine as a perforation machine and said the fewer holes, the stronger the sail. That stuck with me. It's the same with this leather backpack.
---This leather backpack is entirely made of full-grain leather, the strongest and most water-resistant leather. And it's a little thicker than boot leather. We could have saved money, used something less pricey like top grain leather, or saved even more and made a genuine leather backpack. But we didn't worry about the price of the best natural leather. We wanted to make something that would last, so we used the best full grain leather.
---The Thin Front Pocket Leather Backpack has three exterior pockets with a hidden pocket behind them for quick access or for sticking in longer things. The main backpack strap has a hole at the very tip just in case your bag is way, way overstuffed. The shoulder straps have an adjustable and comfortable shoulder pad to distribute the backpack's weight.
Great bag--I own several Saddleback items--side pocket duffel, thin briefcase, and wallets--this is one of my new favorite pieces. The one issue I have with the bag is that its a bit on the small side. Would be ideal if they offered this in a medium (current version) and a large size--two inches taller/longer--similar to the thin briefcase. Recommend but would welcome a bigger version from Dave.

This is the bag I’ve been seeking for a long time. The reviews here sum up the backpack perfectly, i.e., great for an everyday pack, carry on, overnight, classes, etc. I’d like to add that the quality is outstanding. This is a bag that you will stare at constantly, turn over, inspect, bend, open and close, time and time again. You may even catch yourself glancing at it while it sits beside you. I'm a private pilot and it arrived just as I was packing for an overnight. I unboxed my new prize, loaded it up and it flew with me from Boston to New Jersey and back again today; a great inaugural trip. I even was blessed by the smell of the new leather in cockpit from time to time. It was, I’ve got to say, a bit reassuring knowing it was along for the flight. I am so looking forward to breaking it in, softening it up and bringing in on its next adventure, wherever that might be.

First let me say, I love this bag. I decided to take the leap and buy one for myself after going through a horrible time of having to replace backpacks because they fell apart on me ( I'm a backpack abusers anonymous dropout). When I first ordered the bag, I was nervous about the size. It seemed very large across the back and wasn't sure if it would be too big for me. Nope, it's a perfect size. It has become my new EDC and I haven't had trouble with the compartment size. I can fill it with books, my laptop, other electronics, things needed for overnighters and the straps evenly distribute the weight so my shoulders don't scream after a couple hours. The design is perfect, I can use my bag in more formal settings such as meeting new clients or attending meetings at different schools, as well as, use it while I run around for the day. The pockets are a good size for me since it helps me not clutter my bag with the black hole of no return.

(Medium tobacco thin front pocket): It arrived stiff of course, "heavy", and the color looked darker than it did online (which I appreciated). I spent a few days rolling, bending, beating it up. Once soft and broken in, the backpack felt EXTREMELY comfortable to wear and could fit a change of clothes plus my electronics. And it looks great. A full quart size bag of liquids fits perfectly in the front pocket. I ordered both this one and the large front pocket backpack, thinking I would use the bigger pack for road trips and the lighter one for flights...but the large was ginormous. The medium backpack looked dwarfed by the large and even though I'm not a petite lady, I couldn't imagine wearing the gigantic one on my back ever. It was just too big for me. I brought the thin backpack as my "personal item" on my flights and was pleased to find the straps slid right over my carry-on handle to secure the pack there. It's a pleasure to travel with and fits everything I need.

I have been an everyday user of the famed Saddleback 'Tank' backpack since 2012 and lived up and grew strong enough to lug its weight and idiosyncracies. That bag has now been passed on to my 18-year old son. This TFPBP in Chestnut is the culmination of what the next evolution of SB backpacks for its avid users through the years. Lighter, thinner, and with less bulk; without sacrificing the durability and its ability to develop 'character' as the years go by and scratches are accumulated. I love the minimal straps that are long enough even to accommodate the additional bulk of wearing a thick leather jacket. Its profile is thin enough for me not to worry it'll hit diners at a crowded restaurant as I pass by. And the weight is Godsend. Coming from using a Tank, the weight issue has now become extremely manageable. Did it sacrifice capacity? It sure did. But it gave back so much more that it is a pure joy to use and bring with me everywhere I go even in short errands.
