Functionality of This Lawyer's Briefcase

Coolness features are always cool, and this leather briefcase has a few. First, it has the cool Gladstone Bag closure. It opens wide and stays open until you say otherwise. The second coolness feature is the secret hidden flap on the inside bottom. We put one on the bottom of all of our briefcases. The third is the pockets behind the front pockets. Instead of sewing on the front of a pocket and then a flap to save money on leather, we sewed a complete pocket and then sewed it on. You'll see. I put a hole all the way on the tip on the briefcase strap just in case. Also, in case you wanted to close your briefcase but keep it kind of open so you could carry a tube horizontally or vertically in the opening.

Pockets for More Organization

The interior of the Barrister's Briefcase is super spacious with plenty of pockets and a divider to help keep your bag organized. There's a floppy pocket on the front and back interior for a 17" laptop or documents, and then three smaller pockets for chargers, cables, and smaller accessories. The two obvious front pockets on the outside of the briefcase have not-so-obvious pockets behind them. There's also a leather pocket on the backside of the briefcase for sliding a magazine or book into.

No Breakable Parts

It was designed with no breakable parts like zippers, velcro, magnets, buttons, or snaps. The hardware is complete overkill, but we guarantee it will not fail you. Any piece of leather on this briefcase that gets tension at all, gets reinforced with a rivet or hidden polyester strapping or both. Leather naturally stretches but those straps don't. And then, we line the leather briefcase with pigskin, which is stronger than the cowskin, instead of some shiny fabric with a world map on it.

As Few Seams As Possible

They don't say, "He fell apart at the seams" for no reason. Seams are the weakest link of almost all briefcases. Our rocket science solution was to create as few seams as possible. So, I designed this one with a few very large pieces of leather instead of a whole bunch of little ones. The fewer the pieces, the fewer the seams. A briefcase made with many little pieces sewn together makes it cheaper to produce but will fall apart sooner. Watch our fun seam explanation video, where I show a leather duffle bag made with 85 leather pieces. One time, in New Zealand, I interviewed an old sailmaker who called the sewing machine a perforation machine because the needle makes a lot of holes for it to tear, all in a row. That's why sailmakers sew most parts in a zigzag pattern. It keeps the needle holes from being close to each other or in a row. If we sewed in a zig-zag pattern, it would look dumb, so sew with only five stitches per inch to put more leather between needle holes. This leather briefcase is designed for you to be the first owner, but not the last. Your job is to break it in for the generations to come. And that's why we over-engineer all of our leather bags. It seems like the right thing to do.

Full Grain Leather

This leather briefcase is made of only the highest grade of leather, full grain. So you ask, what's the difference between full grain vs. top grain leather? Read and see a simple explanation of them here. Basically, the grain is the tough, dense fibers on the top quarter of the hide. They're tough as nails and tightly woven together. That grain resists water, stains, and tears. A lot of companies trick is asking the tannery to shave or sand off the top of the hide. Then, with the scars and character gone, they can cut up and use almost the entire hide and save a lot of money making briefcases. Our leather is mineral tanned with Chromium (Cr) to make it even stronger. Chrome tanned leather is the most corrosion resistant leather there is, which means your briefcase is corrosion resistant too. It'll laugh at the rain and extreme heat and then thrive on neglect.

Heavy Duty Hardware

Our hardware is 316 Stainless Steel. That won't mean much to most people, but metallurgists usually gasp for air when I tell them. There are different grades of stainless steel, but this is the toughest one. Our clips can actually hold up to a 750 lb bag of cats over the edge of a 2000 ft. cliff without breaking. So let's just say it's the kind of metal you'd want to use if your life depended on it.

The Toughest Thread

Our thread is a German thread they use for making sails for ships. It is a UV resistant industrial marine-grade Polyester thread and the strongest and toughest we could find. And it's thick too. Nylon thread deteriorates with heat and UV rays from the sun. But ours doesn't. Polyester is good and bad. The good part is that it lasts forever. The bad part is that it lasts forever. It's perfect for you if it's in the form of thread and really bad for you if it's in the form of bed sheets or underwear.

Classy. Durable. Heavy AF.

I’m not a lawyer. I’m a banker and this bag is exactly what I was looking for. I needed something that could potentially hold two laptops and not look like it is busting at the seams. I have my personal MacBook and work laptop in here and I still have so much room left! I looked at luxury brands like LV, Gucci, etc… and their briefcases were super tiny and dainty looking. I ordered this briefcase in black as I think it’s the most professional color (for my taste). Highly recommend. Just be forewarned that this briefcase is very heavy!

Beautiful and well made ?

I’ve just received the barrister’s briefcase (chestnut). It is the most beautiful briefcase I’ve seen, and that new leather smell is great. It’s not (hey-look-at-that-guy that’s too) big: it’s bigger than the average suitcase, but not too much. The size is right for business use and small trips. And the structure is rigid, so it looks full even when empty; that’s not a drawback: you don’t want a sad briefcase. The strap is good for busy places if you’re worried of getting robbed. The weight isn’t too much. I was between this and the pilot’s case, and I thought I would regret the choice, but I have not. I may still get that one at some point in the future. One tip for the Gladstone closure is to close it by lightly pressing the hinges on the side. Great briefcase.

I am not a lawyer but I am a pastor. I have owned several SB bags but have never found the "perfect" bag to meet my needs. Well, the search is over. You can haul a ton of stuff with this beast, which I affectionately call, "the Hulk." I am a big buy 6" 2', 280lbs and this fits me perfectly. The only drawback, like all Saddleback bags, is the weight...this is a heavy bag when loaded down ...at 56 years old that is my only complaint. Between carrying my laptop, bible, padfolio, moleskin, and several books at a time, it is heavy. However, to put it next to my desk on the floor, and open the lid (I feel like Jonah getting sucked into the whale's mouth every time I reach into this bag) it can't be beaten. I work out of this bag, to me that is worth its weight in gold. Save much room on top of my desk. Hope this review was helpful. Blessing, and Merry Christmas!

Excellent Quality

I have had this for about a week now in Tobacco, and it is perfect for my needs. It allows me to easily have everything I need for my law practice with me, whether at court or out meeting a client. Usefulness aside, I have received compliments at least three or four times daily and have sent a few people to Saddleback looking for their own already!

I love this briefcase

I got a new laptop and my previous briefcase was too small. I have been replacing my bags with Saddleback Leather bags each time they need replaced. This is my 4th bag and I am very pleased with it. Between the roominess, sturdiness and the great looks of the bag, I will definitely purchase another when it's time to get rid of my lower quality bags and replacing them with the real deal.
