Design of the Front Pocket Leather Backpack

There is no luck in making a quality leather backpack. And this leather backpack with pockets is no exception. It was purposefully designed with no breakable parts like zippers, snaps, or velcro. And any stress spot is reinforced with Polyester straps hidden beneath the leather and riveted. The body of this leather backpack is built with just two big pieces of leather, which means there aren't many seams. The fewer the seams, the stronger the backpack because backpacks come apart at the seams before anywhere else. And then we only sew 5 stitches per inch, so there are as few holes as possible. Quality can be measured in Seam Feet (how few feet of seams a bag has. We made that term up).

Materials used to create this Leather Backpack with Pockets

This backpack is made out of strong materials. The full grain leather is very tough and more resistant to water. The lining is made from pigskin, which is even stronger than cowhide. The hardware is made from 316 Stainless Steel, which is very strong and will not rust. The thread used to sew the backpack together is Polyester, which does not deteriorate in the sun as nylon thread does.

Full Grain Leather

The leather of this backpack is the strongest and most water-resistant we can find (full grain), and then we line it with pigskin, which is stronger than the cow skin. It's rare for a low-quality company to use full grain to make a leather backpack because it's so expensive. When I say "Full Grain Leather" I mean that it still has all of the tough, tightly woven fibers on the top of the hide.

A Genuine Leather Backpack is Missing the Strength

Most companies shave off the scars and blemishes from the top of the hide (watch how they shave it here at minute 6:30) and shave off the strongest and best part of the hide (the grain) while doing it. They shave it down to genuine leather. They do it, so they don't have to cut around the marks and throw those pieces into the trash as we do. We throw away 25% of the hide. They don't throw hardly anything away. But since it still has leather, they can call it a genuine leather backpack. It will not last nearly as long and is missing the beauty.

A Vegan Leather Backpack is Plastic Garbage

Vegan leather is ridiculous. It doesn't even make sense. It's usually polyurethane or PVC, which is a plastic. Do you want to wear a plastic backpack? No? We don't want you to either. You and I both know that will not last longer than your carebear backpack as a kid.

Seriously Strong Hardware in this Leather Backpack with Pockets

I know using 316 Stainless Steel custom hardware is kind of like killing a fly with a shotgun, but we did it anyways. Check that one off the list of potential problems. Our large pieces of hardware on our backpacks are rated strong enough to hold a 750 lb. bag of cats before it gives. Seriously, I hope you google it to understand more. If your life is going to depend on any metal, let it depend on 316 Stainless Steel.

The Best Thread to Hold it all Together

We sew it all together with thick and strong Polyester thread. It's industrial strength and doesn't deteriorate with exposure to the Sun's UV rays like Nylon thread does. This Leather Backpack is very strong from the nature of the materials we use.

From a Brown Leather Backpack, to a Black Leather Backpack, you have options

We know not everyone has the same style. So this leather backpack with pockets comes in four different colors. The light tan color (called Tobacco) develops a beautiful patina over time. There's also Dark Coffee Brown, Chestnut (reddish brown), and Black. So find the style that will suit you.

Very Spacious Main Compartment

The interior main compartment has enough space for your 17" laptop, a charger, other electronic gear, some personal items, your passport, a book, or possibly a few books. You could probably even fit a monkey in there if you had to. But we wouldn't recommend that. This is a very durable leather bag with plenty of room.

Adjustable Shoulder Straps

We want this leather backpack to be easy to carry on and off your back. So we made the most comfortable straps that are easily adjustable. This makes for easy access as you take it off to grab something out and toss it back on your back.

Huge little Large Dry Bag

I think a key design element that really makes this the biggest small bag I've seen is that YOU DON'T HAVE TO CLOSE A ZIPPER, if you think of this as a compression bag from camping you will understand that you can get way more in it than trying to stuff things into a comparable size duffle. I bought the large tobacco brown, the leather is soft and supple yet thick and tough, the bottom has an open top boxy liner which I really like, it keeps a shape to help a shirt stay folded squarely and not get rumpled up. The bag will fit an old style box shaving kit, spare khakis,spare shirt, topsiders, underwear, socks and still have room for flip flops, a tee shirt, shorts, and more. The bag used open would even have more room and looks like a beach bag. I take this bag with me to the jobsite and leave it in my car, it holds spare clothes if I have to go back to the office after a day in the heat. The bag keeps out all dust and dirt. I carry my topsiders to put on after a long day with a drive ahead. This could be used as a front carry food bag for big canoe trips clipped onto your shoulder straps and would hold enough food for a week. If i drive to a job accross the state I would carry this, my briefcase and my Large Waterbag. This bag will compress your gear as much or little as you want making a nice tight package, or use like I said earlier open top and carry by the handles. I can see using this in the hotel to carry clothes to the laundry and back. Made from one piece of leather, and the strap goes accross the one seam on the bag as shown in the picture. I highly recommend this bag to keep your spare clothes in your back seat or to do a short overnight trip. Other saddleback items I have are the large water bag, the Classic briefcase, several moleskine covers, a bifold wallet and some other bags that have been stolen from me, but are still mine, out there somewhere .

amazing travel buddy

I own the large DCB bag and it gets attention wherever I go. I actually had a woman stop me to smell it. What I love the most about it is it's packing flexibility. Carry it open, closed, rolled...there are several options. Quality is bulletproof and it is the best looking bag I've ever owned. It's at home in a 5 star hotel, camping and as a beach tote. The only thing I wish it had was a way to convert it to a backpack and I wish the center strap was one or two inches longer. It's a fantastic carry-on and will fit under most seats. It even fits in the overhead of a commuter jet.

Very versatile bag

I've had the large chestnut for about a year. I got it as a Dave's deal. There isn't really anything noticeable wrong with it. The depth of color in the chestnut seems to be a little lacking in this bag compared to other products, but that seems to be the norm from pictures I've seen around the web. I use this bag to go to the supermarket, as an overnight bag, and sometimes as a work bag. It really can hold a lot of stuff and adapt to your needs. One tip for those that wish the cinch strap was longer- latch a utility strap onto it. I have a set in medium and one almost doubles the length. I had the bag full nearly to the handles and was still able to buckle it.

Great camera bag

I use it as a camera bag and it works great. I've got some thin neoprene pouches for my lenses and and I can really fill it up with a lot. Not the quickest way to get to my gear but I don't have to worry about anything getting wet, or zipper getting caught stuff, or Velcro making noises... Also, it (Medium size) perfectly holds 12 tasty beverage bottles if you're looking for a really nice cooler. :) I took a chance and got the Carbon, I'm not usually a black leather guy but it looks amazing and I'm glad I went with it.

Sand, Hail and Mountain-Proof!

This was my first bag from Saddleback Leather, and I have to say, it completely ruined my desire to ever buy any more branded leather bags! There is just absolutely no comparison when it comes to the quality of a Saddleback. Shortly after I bought it in the stunning Coffee Brown, the Carbon (which I wanted!) came back in stock, but when I received it, I couldn't bear to return my Coffee! My boyfriend and I have received many many compliments while we took turns to carry it around. I took it travelling through Canada in the coldest, harshest winter I've ever been through. It survived the sudden hail storm in Niagara, a flying fall down the mountain side in Montreal, and a rocky brush-off when I tripped at the Malecón in Cuba with barely any scratches! Snow and dust never once entered the bag to harm my DSLR camera or its extra sensitive lenses. My only wish is that the bag were lighter, though! At 5'1 and about 100lbs, I'm quite petite. The bag, even with just my cameras, lenses, and travel necessities really wore me out on longer routes and I had to rest more frequently than I'd hoped. Boyfriend (at ~6') had absolutely no complaints about the weight though, so it's probably just because I'm not strong enough for the bag! Saving up for the lighter Simple Tote from Love 41 now, can't wait to purchase more Saddleback!
