Design of the Front Pocket Leather Backpack

There is no luck in making a quality leather backpack. And this leather backpack with pockets is no exception. It was purposefully designed with no breakable parts like zippers, snaps, or velcro. And any stress spot is reinforced with Polyester straps hidden beneath the leather and riveted. The body of this leather backpack is built with just two big pieces of leather, which means there aren't many seams. The fewer the seams, the stronger the backpack because backpacks come apart at the seams before anywhere else. And then we only sew 5 stitches per inch, so there are as few holes as possible. Quality can be measured in Seam Feet (how few feet of seams a bag has. We made that term up).

Materials used to create this Leather Backpack with Pockets

This backpack is made out of strong materials. The full grain leather is very tough and more resistant to water. The lining is made from pigskin, which is even stronger than cowhide. The hardware is made from 316 Stainless Steel, which is very strong and will not rust. The thread used to sew the backpack together is Polyester, which does not deteriorate in the sun as nylon thread does.

Full Grain Leather

The leather of this backpack is the strongest and most water-resistant we can find (full grain), and then we line it with pigskin, which is stronger than the cow skin. It's rare for a low-quality company to use full grain to make a leather backpack because it's so expensive. When I say "Full Grain Leather" I mean that it still has all of the tough, tightly woven fibers on the top of the hide.

A Genuine Leather Backpack is Missing the Strength

Most companies shave off the scars and blemishes from the top of the hide (watch how they shave it here at minute 6:30) and shave off the strongest and best part of the hide (the grain) while doing it. They shave it down to genuine leather. They do it, so they don't have to cut around the marks and throw those pieces into the trash as we do. We throw away 25% of the hide. They don't throw hardly anything away. But since it still has leather, they can call it a genuine leather backpack. It will not last nearly as long and is missing the beauty.

A Vegan Leather Backpack is Plastic Garbage

Vegan leather is ridiculous. It doesn't even make sense. It's usually polyurethane or PVC, which is a plastic. Do you want to wear a plastic backpack? No? We don't want you to either. You and I both know that will not last longer than your carebear backpack as a kid.

Seriously Strong Hardware in this Leather Backpack with Pockets

I know using 316 Stainless Steel custom hardware is kind of like killing a fly with a shotgun, but we did it anyways. Check that one off the list of potential problems. Our large pieces of hardware on our backpacks are rated strong enough to hold a 750 lb. bag of cats before it gives. Seriously, I hope you google it to understand more. If your life is going to depend on any metal, let it depend on 316 Stainless Steel.

The Best Thread to Hold it all Together

We sew it all together with thick and strong Polyester thread. It's industrial strength and doesn't deteriorate with exposure to the Sun's UV rays like Nylon thread does. This Leather Backpack is very strong from the nature of the materials we use.

From a Brown Leather Backpack, to a Black Leather Backpack, you have options

We know not everyone has the same style. So this leather backpack with pockets comes in four different colors. The light tan color (called Tobacco) develops a beautiful patina over time. There's also Dark Coffee Brown, Chestnut (reddish brown), and Black. So find the style that will suit you.

Very Spacious Main Compartment

The interior main compartment has enough space for your 17" laptop, a charger, other electronic gear, some personal items, your passport, a book, or possibly a few books. You could probably even fit a monkey in there if you had to. But we wouldn't recommend that. This is a very durable leather bag with plenty of room.

Adjustable Shoulder Straps

We want this leather backpack to be easy to carry on and off your back. So we made the most comfortable straps that are easily adjustable. This makes for easy access as you take it off to grab something out and toss it back on your back.

One if by land, two if by sea, three if you'????re counting the pockets on the Saddleback 17"?? Front Pocket Backpack. Here'????s mine (Dark Coffee Brown), paying respect at the tomb of Paul Revere (Granary Burying Ground, Boston, Mass.). This bag is a true patriot. Spend the money. You deserve it. So right out of the box, it'??s a little stiff. Yet, it loosens-up and begins to conform to your things and lifestyle in only a few days; in less than a week, it already felt like it was well on its way to becoming ??broken in. Regarding weight: this is a heavy bag. But, it doesn't feel heavy when you actually carry it on your back. I was stunned by how well it distributes weight. I jam-pack this thing full of books and papers (I'm an English professor at 3 colleges in Boston), my 11" MacBook Air, office supplies, two of the Saddleback Cable Bags (one for cables, one for my pipe), Tums, a Nalgene bottle (14 oz.), food, and other daily junk, but never feel like it's cumbersome or uncomfortable. The neoprene band at the lower-back area is quite the nice touch. Regarding pockets: Yes, a small water bottle fits in either of the side pockets (I was concerned about this initially). Yes, there is a spot behind the front pocket as well as the side pockets. Regarding size: Get the 17"????. (Everyone.) The size difference refers to the height of the bag only. I like to line-up the main contents of the bag, and then stack???? other things on top. (You can fit a light jacket in the bag on top of your stuff.) Other thoughts? It smells like heaven. I must look like a maniac with my nose buried in it. And, as cliche as this remark has become on this website, I am almost overwhelmed by the number of people who come up to me to compliment the bag. Another great product from the people at Saddleback. I'????m sure that they'll have more of my money soon. P.S. To Dave (et al.): Thank you so much for the keychain. It was a very nice surprise.

I ordered the medium front pocket tobacco backpack to take on camping and short trips. Our first trip was to lake LBJ in Marble Falls, TX. My wife and I used the backpack to put 3 days worth of clothes in it and fell in love with it. It wasn't shortly after the trip on the way home that my she claimed the backpack for herself. Since then, I have purchased a Squared tobacco backpack and duffle beast for myself. I can't wait to use them on our next trip this summer! The Saddleback Leather products are simply the best!

Don't Think About It - Do it!

Had wanted to get the large backpack for a while, and happy I did. Another great Saddleback product (Thanks Dave). Be prepared to answer questions about it. I get comments and questions about it daily. I have been chased down in an airport when someone saw it on my back, and have heard women whispering to each other how sexy it was as I walked by. My biggest surprise was how comfortable it was fully loaded - I carry lots of stuff when traveling for business - super comfortable on your back. Two suggestions: one for Saddleback: the handle is a bit small and/or the d-rings close together - my big hands are a tight fit. Second comment for a buyer: I carry a lot of really small items (small camera stuff, computer stuff, batteries, keys, etc. and was concerned about them falling out of the pockets (since the closure is a flap over the top of the pocket) I solved this with a couple of Eagle Creek Pack-It cubes (quarter cubes for the side pockets, Half Tube Cube for the front pocket) - they fit the pockets perfectly and ensure your stuff won't "leak out" if your bag takes a tumble. Bottom line - you will NOT regret buying this backpack. Outstanding quality, unique look (not another cookie cutter bag), tough as nails, comfortable to wear.

Best Birthday Gift Ever

In April of 2013, my daughter asked for an "Adventure Backpack" for her birthday. After hours of searching the internet, I happened upon the Saddleback website. I knew (almost instantly) that I was about to spend way too much money on a birthday gift for a 14 year old. It's been 10 months and I have NO REGRETS. The bag is PERFECT - it has already become a part of her and carries with it treasured memories. It gets better with time. The compliments flow. In fact, the bag is SO great that my son asked for the Squared Backpack for Christmas (he's 18 and a senior in HS). We got it for him (we are weak - not well-off) and, again, NO REGRETS. Thank you, Dave, for creating a product worth having for a lifetime.
