Just purchased this for my husband's birthday. On a recent trip, he received over 20 astounding compliments on the backpack, specifically in both airports. He said that many of them were from TSA agents, and they see a lot of carry-ons! Wonderful product!

Best Backpack Ever!

I had been eyeing this piece for quite a while, but at just over $600 all in, it was an investment I needed to think about. Truth be told, I didn’t need it. I own several pieces by Saddleback Leather already; a Large Messenger (discontinued), the Every Day Carry (EDC), the leather Organizer Pouch, and the Indiana Satchel in both tobacco leather and waxed canvas. That said, this particular piece just kept calling my name, so I bought it as a Christmas present from me to me... and I’m so glad I did!

As is always the case with Saddleback, the leather was stiff and rigid when it arrived... but in the six weeks I’ve been carrying it, things are starting to soften up nicely. I throw it in the back seat of my truck and I toss it on the floor by my desk, so it’s finally starting to get a bit of surface wear and look interesting. I really can’t wait to take it on some long trips so it can start to tell my “story.”

The construction is top notch... more space than I’d ever imagined. I’m particularly fond of the open pouches behind each of the pockets. They’re great for easy access to my phones, wallet, etc, but secure enough that i don’t worry about losing them. If there was anything I could change about it, it would simply be to add one more D ring at the top where I could clip the inordinate amount of keys I am required to carry. (I’ve ended up just clipping them where the straps attach, but I would really prefer to have them hang off to the side of the bag.)

A Saddleback customer for years, it is not uncommon that people notice and ask about the bags I carry, but this one really gets noticed! I’ve had multiple people stop and ask about it as I am coming and going. I opted for the laser engraved initials on the front flap, and it looks so good!

If you have any doubts about whether or not this piece is for you, I would encourage you to take the plunge. It’s a beautiful piece of art with amazing function and form.

Design Of The Front Pocket Leather Backpack

There is no luck in making a quality leather backpack. And this leather backpack with pockets is no exception. It was purposefully designed with no breakable parts like zippers, snaps, or velcro. And any stress spot is reinforced with Polyester straps hidden beneath the leather and riveted.

The body of this leather backpack is built with just two big pieces of leather, which means there aren't many seams. The fewer the seams, the stronger the backpack because backpacks come apart at the seams before anywhere else. And then we only sew 5 stitches per inch, so there are as few holes as possible. Quality can be measured in Seam Feet (how few feet of seams a bag has. We made that term up).

Materials Used To Create This Leather Backpack With Pockets

This backpack is made out of strong materials. The full grain leather is very tough and more resistant to water. The lining is made from pigskin, which is even stronger than cowhide. The hardware is made from 316 Stainless Steel, which is very strong and will not rust. The thread used to sew the backpack together is Polyester, which does not deteriorate in the sun as nylon thread does.

This front pocket full grain leather backpack is designed for durability, with no breakable parts like zippers or snaps, and stress spots reinforced with Polyester straps.

Full Grain Leather

The leather of this backpack is the strongest and most water-resistant we can find (full grain), and then we line it with pigskin, which is stronger than the cow skin. It's rare for a low-quality company to use full grain to make a leather backpack because it's so expensive. When I say "Full Grain Leather" I mean that it still has all of the tough, tightly woven fibers on the top of the hide.

A Genuine Leather Backpack is Missing The Strength

Most companies shave off the scars and blemishes from the top of the hide (watch how they shave it here at minute 6:30) and shave off the strongest and best part of the hide (the grain) while doing it. They shave it down to genuine leather. They do it, so they don't have to cut around the marks and throw those pieces into the trash as we do. We throw away 25% of the hide. They don't throw hardly anything away. But since it still has leather, they can call it a genuine leather backpack. It will not last nearly as long and is missing the beauty.

A Vegan Leather Backpack is Plastic Garbage

Vegan leather is ridiculous. It doesn't even make sense. It's usually polyurethane or PVC, which is a plastic. Do you want to wear a plastic backpack? No? We don't want you to either. You and I both know that will not last longer than your carebear backpack as a kid.

This front pocket full grain leather backpack is designed for durability, with features such as reinforced seams and heavy-duty hardware.

Seriously Strong Hardware in this Leather Backpack with Pockets

I know using 316 Stainless Steel custom hardware is kind of like killing a fly with a shotgun, but we did it anyways. Check that one off the list of potential problems. Our large pieces of hardware on our backpacks are rated strong enough to hold a 750 lb. bag of cats before it gives. Seriously, I hope you google it to understand more. If your life is going to depend on any metal, let it depend on 316 Stainless Steel.

The Best Thread to Hold It All Together

Then we sew it all together with thick and strong Polyester thread. It's industrial strength and doesn't deteriorate with exposure to the Sun's UV rays like Nylon thread does. This Leather Backpack is very strong from the nature of the materials we use.

Functionality of this Leather Backpack

This Leather Backpack with pockets has a floppy interior laptop back pocket. All three exterior pockets have a hidden pocket behind them for quick access and longer things. This includes the side pocket on each side. The lower d-rings on the bottom of the backpack are great for strapping on tripods, blankets, and wet river shoes. The shoulder straps are minimal, comfortable, and adjustable. In fact, you can remove the shoulder pads for whatever reason. Like if you are tying down something with a nice finish on the roof rack of your Land Cruiser and you don't want the rope to leave a mark. You can put this shoulder pad under the rope. I know there aren't many ways to innovate for functionality on a plain leather backpack, but when I found a chance, I took it.

The full grain leather backpack is designed to be strong and water resistant, with few seams and a durable construction.

From a Brown Leather Backpack to a Black Leather Backpack, You Have Options

We know not everyone has the same style. So this leather backpack with pockets comes in three colors of brown, and we also make it as a black leather backpack. The brown options are classic tobacco, chestnut, and dark coffee brown. So find the style that will suit you. Any color you choose with be a good choice with the quality and features of this leather backpack with pockets.

The Hiking Through the Panamanian Jungle Full Grain Leather Backpack Bedtime Story is about a trip my brother and I took where the ankle-high grass turned into dense underbrush and a double canopy overhead as we found ourselves in the middle of a dense Panamanian jungle.

Very Spacious Main Compartment

The interior main compartment has enough space for your 17" laptop, a charger, other electronic gear, some personal items, your passport, a book, or possibly a few books. You could probably even fit a monkey in there if you had to. But we wouldn't recommend that. This is a very durable leather bag with plenty of room.

Adjustable Shoulder Straps

We want this leather backpack to be easy to carry on and off your back. So we made the most comfortable straps that are easily adjustable. This makes for easy access as you take it off to grab something out and toss it back on your back.

More than a Laptop Bag

It is more than a big laptop bag. It also makes a great day bag or even a perfect carry-on for your next adventure or business trip. The durability is amazing, and it still retains the elegant look of class. From the 316 stainless steel buckles to the top flap design, everything was done on purpose with lots of thought.

The full grain leather backpack was designed to be strong, with no breakable parts like zippers or snaps or velcro, and few seams for a durable finish.

The Hiking Through the Panamanian Jungle Leather Backpack Bedtime Story

My brother and I were dropped off by a boat on one of the Bocas del Toro islands heading to a famed surf spot called Wizard Beach. Everything seemed fine as we started on the trail up a nice grassy knoll with my Leather Backpack on my back, a fancy camera around my neck, and a leather suitcase in my hand. Jonathan was carrying our sole surfboard and a small leather satchel, and we were good to go.

This full grain leather backpack is designed for durability, with features including reinforced stress points and tough, water-resistant leather.

But in no time at all, the ankle-high grass turned into dense underbrush and a double canopy overhead as we found ourselves in the middle of a dense Panamanian jungle. But that wasn't the problem. The problem was that the muddy trail was up and down and slicker than snot. It felt like we were hiking in roller skates on wet ice even though I was wearing my hiking Teva sandals. Seriously, never had I experienced any mud like that. It was all we could do to stay on our feet, and it's times like this you appreciate a solid leather backpack on your back to let your hands be free to grab trees and roots and walk with a stick in hand.

I'm not saying that we would have been forever lost in the jungle and eaten by monkeys there if it weren't for my trusty leather backpack. Still, I'm just saying it's a really good idea to wear a backpack to keep both hands free when you're out and about off the pavement.

The Hiking Through the Panamanian Jungle Leather Backpack Bedtime Story is about a brother and sister who, while on a hike to find a surf spot, found themselves in the middle of a dense Panamanian jungle. Despite the difficult conditions, they appreciated having a full grain leather backpack to help them navigate through the mud.

We finally got to Wizard Beach, put my leather backpack down, and learned why everybody had talked it up so much. It was no fable. The waves were monsters. Not like Zicatela Beach in Puerto Escondido, but they were huge. So Jonathan looked at me, and I looked at him, and we mutually decided that it wouldn't be a good idea to go out that day. I had a runny nose, and he had picked up a splinter in the jungle on his little finger, and waves like that could only make our ailments worse. So we stayed on the beach for a few hours, taking it all in, and then made our way back to the little dock again. It's not always the destination but the journey to get there that makes a trip fun.
