Design of the Front Pocket Leather Backpack

There is no luck in making a quality leather backpack. And this leather backpack with pockets is no exception. It was purposefully designed with no breakable parts like zippers, snaps, or velcro. And any stress spot is reinforced with Polyester straps hidden beneath the leather and riveted. The body of this leather backpack is built with just two big pieces of leather, which means there aren't many seams. The fewer the seams, the stronger the backpack because backpacks come apart at the seams before anywhere else. And then we only sew 5 stitches per inch, so there are as few holes as possible. Quality can be measured in Seam Feet (how few feet of seams a bag has. We made that term up).

Materials used to create this Leather Backpack with Pockets

This backpack is made out of strong materials. The full grain leather is very tough and more resistant to water. The lining is made from pigskin, which is even stronger than cowhide. The hardware is made from 316 Stainless Steel, which is very strong and will not rust. The thread used to sew the backpack together is Polyester, which does not deteriorate in the sun as nylon thread does.

Full Grain Leather

The leather of this backpack is the strongest and most water-resistant we can find (full grain), and then we line it with pigskin, which is stronger than the cow skin. It's rare for a low-quality company to use full grain to make a leather backpack because it's so expensive. When I say "Full Grain Leather" I mean that it still has all of the tough, tightly woven fibers on the top of the hide.

A Genuine Leather Backpack is Missing the Strength

Most companies shave off the scars and blemishes from the top of the hide (watch how they shave it here at minute 6:30) and shave off the strongest and best part of the hide (the grain) while doing it. They shave it down to genuine leather. They do it, so they don't have to cut around the marks and throw those pieces into the trash as we do. We throw away 25% of the hide. They don't throw hardly anything away. But since it still has leather, they can call it a genuine leather backpack. It will not last nearly as long and is missing the beauty.

A Vegan Leather Backpack is Plastic Garbage

Vegan leather is ridiculous. It doesn't even make sense. It's usually polyurethane or PVC, which is a plastic. Do you want to wear a plastic backpack? No? We don't want you to either. You and I both know that will not last longer than your carebear backpack as a kid.

Seriously Strong Hardware in this Leather Backpack with Pockets

I know using 316 Stainless Steel custom hardware is kind of like killing a fly with a shotgun, but we did it anyways. Check that one off the list of potential problems. Our large pieces of hardware on our backpacks are rated strong enough to hold a 750 lb. bag of cats before it gives. Seriously, I hope you google it to understand more. If your life is going to depend on any metal, let it depend on 316 Stainless Steel.

The Best Thread to Hold it all Together

We sew it all together with thick and strong Polyester thread. It's industrial strength and doesn't deteriorate with exposure to the Sun's UV rays like Nylon thread does. This Leather Backpack is very strong from the nature of the materials we use.

We know not everyone has the same style. So this leather backpack with pockets comes in four different colors. The light tan color (called Tobacco) develops a beautiful patina over time. There's also Dark Coffee Brown, Chestnut (reddish brown), and Black. So find the style that will suit you.

Very Spacious Main Compartment

The interior main compartment has enough space for your 17" laptop, a charger, other electronic gear, some personal items, your passport, a book, or possibly a few books. You could probably even fit a monkey in there if you had to. But we wouldn't recommend that. This is a very durable leather bag with plenty of room.

Adjustable Shoulder Straps

Fantastic!!

I bought here, but put a review on Amazon...figured I should put the review here too. I bought the, new model, large. The only difference is it is 17" tall, as apposed to 14" on the medium. The bag is OUTSTANDING in quality, craftsmanship, and utility. I'm 65yrs, 6', 200lbs, and have walked to town, 14 mile round trip, with the pack fully loaded, three times (the first two times the bag weighed 30lbs.) The bag is fitting like a glove the more it breaks in. On the third trip to town, overloaded fully as though camping, I threw in an extra 15lbs of lead shot bags from my diving weight belt. The bag, at 53lbs (ridiculous I know, but I wanted to really test myself and the bag,) felt comfortable, riding well on my back. I have to say the bag did better than I the last three miles or so. OK, OK, been a long winter at 8,300ft and I'm just getting into shape. One thing to note, it did get hot between my back and the bag. I doubt, in normal usage, I would ever be carrying 30lbs, let alone 53lbs......I wish I had this bag decades ago. It's an investment, sure, but it will pay dividends in the years to come. The bag is a bit heavy compared to modern material bags, but was easy for me to get used to. I've been using Jandd, Ultimate Directions, and a Gregory, of similar capacity, for thirty years. I doubt if I will ever use them again. Not only will you have a lifetime of use with this bag, you'll be the classiest person out there. It gets folks talking to you, as they recognize the quality from a distance. The fear of the price will quickly be overcome by the smell, quality, looks, and the creaking of the leather, of this functional, tough, piece of art.

Last backpack you will buy!!

I had a previous "tank" style backpack which didn't get a lot of use so I decided I would get a 14" front pocket style backpack. Pulled the trigger ordered this from Dave's Deals and upon arrival and initial inspection I could not find any imperfections with it!! Took this along on our annual vacation to Antigua so I loaded it up with my 13" MacBook pro in a Saddleback sleeve and my iPad in a Saddleback cover along with the assorted chargers and a change of clothes and other misc. stuff. This backpack can hold an amazing amount of stuff, it fits real nice and very comfortable on your back. I'm not a backpack person until now, it was used everyday to go to the beach, going out on daytrips and horseback riding. After a week of regular use it is already starting to get broken in just nicely. It's a great size for everyday use and can hold quite a bit, the pull strap around the opening is nice for the added bit of security. The front and side pockets are the perfect size for holding chargers, glasses and smaller items. I use the opening behind the side pocket is perfect for holding a bottle of water or my Kleen Kanteen. Now that the nicer weather has finally come to Ontario I will be using it for carrying my DSLR camera and gear, out on mountain bike rides and going back and forth to our cottage. Like the previous reviewers I rate this a 5 out of 5, it will be the last backpack you will own. Derek

I'm Not Worthy!

This is a whole lotta leather. Whole lotta leather backpack, to be specific. It's over-engineered for sure, and I fell in love with it the day I received it. I love that it has SIX total pockets in the front, substantial enough that you can really organize before you even get in the backpack, and I love the big space inside. I am 5 foot nothing, and I didn't think the weight of the backpack was an issue at all. The backpack straps are super comfortable and mitigate the weight nicely. The carbon color of the leather was...I think 'cool' is the only word that can describe it. So...cool. The only reason I sent it back was because it's way too much backpack for me. I feel silly carrying it around because it's so gorgeous and made so well, and my tastes run simpler, and less.....oomph. I honestly felt like the backpack was carrying me, and not the other way around! But it is definitely an attention getter, and most importantly, built to last. For my daily commute, I will seek out a less fabulous pack, and maybe keep this on my wishlist for future adventures. This backpack was made to go on adventures.

Worth being called silly For

OK..So I first saw one of these bags in Frankfurt Germany. A customer of mine (American) and I were on the road for a couple of days and he had this fantastic leather bag.. I really liked it and he said I would be silly (you Americans are so eloquent) it I didn't buy one. So long story short the large front pocket backpack in chestnut brown arrived a week ago and I have used it for my work PC and ancillary "stuff". It gets looks and comments wherever I go and despite some initial thoughts before it arrived as to whether I should have got the one with internal pockets..I am glad I got this one as it is just perfect. I also bought the cable bag and this does indeed get ALL my cables in it.. So the side pockets hold my passport drivers license rubbish and loose change..The front one holds business cards and headphone cables. I actually like the fact that getting in to the pockets is not as quick as another reviewer liked..It adds to my sense of security. I travel all over Europe and some places I was a bit nervous of a bag being slashed or a zip opened..NOT now..I just think it will add to the stories. Thanks for the key ting it is my office fob now. I even spoke with customer service and they were great. So nice to buy stuff that does what it says on the site. Thanks guys. Geoff.

My wife bought me this bag for my 50th birthday. I absolutely love it! Goes great with my Saddleback briefcase which I've had for many years. This is now the 3rd bag in the family and we just love every one of them! So does our Golden Retriever!
