Materials in Our Leather Briefcases

The materials in our leather briefcase are full grain leather, pigskin lining, 316 stainless steel hardware, and German industrial marine-grade polyester thread. Our leather is tough and resilient, and our pigskin lining is super strong. Our hardware is 316 stainless steel and is rated to hold up to 750 lbs. Our thread is UV-resistant and German industrial marine-grade polyester thread. In addition, our hidden reinforcing straps ensure that the bag will never stretch and those straps will never deteriorate. This is over-engineering.

Full Grain Leather is the Key to a Good Bag

Full Grain Leather is the key to a quality leather briefcase. If you take off the top part of the leather (grain) it's like taking the shingles off of the roof. They get rid of the toughest and most resistant layer of the hide. When tanneries get a leather hide from the slaughterhouse, it's really thick. So, the tannery splits the top half with the grain from the bottom half. Now they have two hides to sell. The tough and beasty hide that still has the full amount of grain (full grain) is expensive, and that's what we buy. The bottom half is great for making low quality budget leather briefcases or laptop bags that will dry out and fall apart in a short time.

Lining in Our Leather Briefcases

We glue and sew tough, strong pigskin leather to the cow leather. And the pigskin is even stronger than the cowskin. We've chosen this instead of using a shiny pretty fabric lining. We want all of our real leather bags to be durable, rugged, and sturdy.

The Best Hardware for Leather Briefcases

Our custom hardware is 316 Stainless Steel. If you are a metallurgist, then I'm sure you just gasped. It's the metal you want to be used when your life depends on it. The testing laboratory told us that our clips were rated to hold up to a 750 lbs. bag of cats.

Thread That Doesn't Fall Apart

Our thread is unbelievably strong and UV resistant German industrial marine-grade polyester thread. It doesn't deteriorate when the sun hits it like nylon thread does. And we use the thick double ought version of it. It's the same thread used on ship sails and parachutes (things your life depends on).

Hidden Reinforcing Straps

Polyester is good and bad. The good is that it doesn't stretch and never deteriorates. The bad is that it never deteriorates. When it comes to polyester in your sheets and blankets, you won't sleep as well. But, when it comes to polyester straps sewn into the stress points of a bag, it's the best there is to get that extra strength.

Backpack Feature

The classic leather briefcase converts into a laptop backpack with a shoulder strap with two shoulder pads. Clip one end of the strap onto a d-ring on the bottom, run the strap through the o-ring, and clip it to the opposite side and you've got yourself a backpack. Now your hands are free to carry the wife and kid's luggage.

Removable Side Straps

You can remove the side straps to use as an emergency size 36 full grain leather belt, tie-down, or tourniquet (hopefully you won't need that). But on the bag, they are great for holding wet umbrellas and blueprint tubes to the top of the flap.

D-Rings on the Bottom and Side

The d-rings on the bottom are designed to strap on blankets, dirty boots, fly rod tubes, or blueprints. And you'll use these d-rings to convert your leather briefcase into backpack mode. The d-rings up top are great for clipping keychains, carabiners, or extra gear too.

Removable, Adjustable Shoulder Strap

The shoulder strap is adjustable (40" - 65") and it's removable. You can take it off to tie down the Christmas tree to the roof of your car. The shoulder strap comes with two strap pads for backpack mode.

False Bottom Secret Compartment

There is a hidden flap on the bottom of this leather briefcase for hiding passports, extra cash, your collection of rubies, or whatever else you don't want anyone to know about. This false bottom can be a lifesaver in itself.

Extra Hole for Just in Case

A small detail, but the main center strap has a hole all the way at the tip for closing when your laptop bag is really overstuffed. This gives you that much extra space in your leather briefcase, for "just in case." Comes in handy when you need it.

There is a pocket on the side, a pocket on the back, and pockets on the inside. From a place for your pens to a spot for your wallet in case you lose your pants.     This Bag Delivers

    I've had my medium chestnut briefcase for a few months now, and though I've carried it to work almost every day, I hadn't really lived with it until early February when I took it on a long weekend to California wine country. I used it as my carry-on bag (and packed it with extra clothes and shoes in case my checked luggage was lost) and couldn't believe just how much I could fit in there. In short, this'll be my weekend bag from now on. When my wife and I arrived in California (after a severely long drought) the skies opened up and it rained more than a foot and a half in just under three days. During this time, I decided to put Dave's promise that his leather "laughs at water" to the test. I carried it everywhere--on my shoulder, as a backpack. The bag got wet. Repeatedly. To the point I started to get nervous about what I'd put my expensive bag through. Turns out I didn't need to worry. I could almost hear the bag chuckle the first time I wiped it down with a dry cloth. No marks, no stains, no visible damage. That said, it somehow looks better than it ever did. I can't put my finger on it, but it might be that I just appreciate its fine craftsmanship even more after the trip. At any rate, I'm not going anywhere without it from now on.

    Awesome Bag - just can't get it to stand up straight

    I own two med. sized classic briefcases - the bags are tough looking and have gotten several positive comments from people. I have never used the shoulder strap and generally use the bags to carry documents from car, to office, to boardroom. I am somewhat annoyed at how one of the bags won't stay up on their own, instead one in particular seems to sag, and often falls over spilling all of the stuff on the floor. My colleague bought a thin front pocket briefcase and had the same problem, after asking them he concluded that apparently they soften up over the years, but I am not convinced at how that would solve the problem and don't really want to wait the prescribed 15 years. I'm going to order a large briefcase shortly, and will report back as to whether or not it is lopsided too.

    I recently bought the the Classic briefcase the leather pouch a coin purse and cable bag all dark coffee brown . I thought the large briefcase might be to big no way it's perfect not as heavy to me as many say. It's craftsmanship at its finest everything laid out perfectly for me, worth every penny, the pouch awesome I have two phones a galaxy note 3 and an I phone plus it carries both with my waterproof notebook and steel pen. Does not look man pursey at all oh an my knife fits too. Carries easy and well the quality of the bag is the best it fits my classic briefcase in many ways clips right on did I mention the quality of the leather and workmanship? Hehe it is the best I've seen. cable bag fits briefcase easily and cleans up clutter and is tough as nails. I put this awesome array of man goodies next to my Tucker saddle yup you deserve the name Saddleback I'm impressed and now a loyal customer oh and I need another cable bag , off to order before we head to Alaska next week where my new accessories will feel at home in the frontier what stories they will contain . Thank you Saddleback you are true to your word.

    No Buyers Remorse, No Regrets

    This is absolutely my favorite briefcase and well worth the investment, and I have received so many compliments about it. I bought my large, dark coffee brown, classic briefcase from saddleback leather a couple of months ago, and have been 100% happy with it. I work in the technology field and frequently have the need to carry around both a PC laptop and an Apple Mac Book Pro for my work, I can easily fit them both in this briefcase along with all the other items I need to carry with me, with no problem at all. The case is a rugged, well-constructed bag that exemplifies, simplicity and functional design. I also like the fact that it looks great and equally at home, whether I'"m using it at work or traveling. I'm looking forward to using it for many years to come. Thanks Dave for the great product!!!!     My left hand.

    This bag has gone with me to the operating room (and everywhere else) for three years. I don't think about it too much. it's just my bag, the way my left had is just my left hand. I mean, do you say "boy, what a great left hand I have?" No. it just is your left hand, the way my saddleback is just my bag. No muss, no fuss. Would I miss my left hand? Of course. Likewise my saddleback. Just buy it. You'll see.
