Full grain leather briefcase by Saddleback Leather.

Materials in Our Leather Briefcases

The materials in our leather briefcase are full grain leather, pigskin lining, 316 stainless steel hardware, and German industrial marine-grade polyester thread. Our leather is tough and resilient, and our pigskin lining is super strong. Our hardware is 316 stainless steel and is rated to hold up to 750 lbs. Our thread is UV-resistant and German industrial marine-grade polyester thread. In addition, our hidden reinforcing straps ensure that the bag will never stretch and those straps will never deteriorate. This is over-engineering.

Full Grain Leather is the Key to a Good Bag

Full Grain Leather is the key to a quality leather briefcase. If you take off the top part of the leather (grain) it's like taking the shingles off of the roof. They get rid of the toughest and most resistant layer of the hide. When tanneries get a leather hide from the slaughterhouse, it's really thick. So, the tannery splits the top half with the grain from the bottom half. Now they have two hides to sell. The tough and beasty hide that still has the full amount of grain (full grain) is expensive, and that's what we buy. The bottom half is great for making low quality budget leather briefcases or laptop bags that will dry out and fall apart in a short time.

Lining in Our Leather Briefcases

We glue and sew tough, strong pigskin leather to the cow leather. And the pigskin is even stronger than the cowskin. We've chosen this instead of using a shiny pretty fabric lining. We want all of our real leather bags to be durable, rugged, and sturdy.

The Best Hardware for Leather Briefcases

Our custom hardware is 316 Stainless Steel. If you are a metallurgist, then I'm sure you just gasped. It's the metal you want to be used when your life depends on it. The testing laboratory told us that our clips were rated to hold up to a 750 lbs. bag of cats.

Thread That Doesn't Fall Apart

Our thread is unbelievably strong and UV resistant German industrial marine-grade polyester thread. It doesn't deteriorate when the sun hits it like nylon thread does. And we use the thick double ought version of it. It's the same thread used on ship sails and parachutes (things your life depends on).

Hidden Reinforcing Straps

Polyester is good and bad. The good is that it doesn't stretch and never deteriorates. The bad is that it never deteriorates. When it comes to polyester in your sheets and blankets, you won't sleep as well. But, when it comes to polyester straps sewn into the stress points of a bag, it's the best there is to get that extra strength.

Backpack Feature

The classic leather briefcase converts into a laptop backpack with a shoulder strap with two shoulder pads. Clip one end of the strap onto a d-ring on the bottom, run the strap through the o-ring, and clip it to the opposite side and you've got yourself a backpack. Now your hands are free to carry the wife and kid's luggage.

Removable Side Straps

You can remove the side straps to use as an emergency size 36 full grain leather belt, tie-down, or tourniquet (hopefully you won't need that). But on the bag, they are great for holding wet umbrellas and blueprint tubes to the top of the flap.

D-Rings on the Bottom and Side

The d-rings on the bottom are designed to strap on blankets, dirty boots, fly rod tubes, or blueprints. And you'll use these d-rings to convert your leather briefcase into backpack mode. The d-rings up top are great for clipping keychains, carabiners, or extra gear too.

Removable, Adjustable Shoulder Strap

The shoulder strap is adjustable (40" - 65") and it's removable. You can take it off to tie down the Christmas tree to the roof of your car. The shoulder strap comes with two strap pads for backpack mode.

False Bottom Secret Compartment

There is a hidden flap on the bottom of this leather briefcase for hiding passports, extra cash, your collection of rubies, or whatever else you don't want anyone to know about. This false bottom can be a lifesaver in itself.

Extra Hole for Just in Case

A small detail, but the main center strap has a hole all the way at the tip for closing when your laptop bag is really overstuffed. This gives you that much extra space in your leather briefcase, for "just in case." Comes in handy when you need it.

Pockets in the Classic Leather Briefcase

There is a pocket on the side, a pocket on the back, and pockets on the inside. From a place for your pens to a spot for your wallet in case you lose your pants. With two main compartments inside, you can take two laptops if need be, with room for chargers and accessories. These quality leather briefcases will protect your belongings and your reputation.

    Leaning Bag of Pisa

Bought the extra large brief. Good looking bag. Will last a lifetime. The problem with the bag is it leans too much. It makes it difficult to put stuff in or take stuff out. So it is a briefcase that is not as functional as I would have expected. I shared my disappointment with Saddleback but because I tried to break the bag in for more than 30 days , Saddleback refused to take it back. So if you have any issues with a product be sure to send it back within 30 days.

    "New-2-Me" Large Tobacco Briefcase

I managed to "rescue" a large tobacco colored classic briefcase. Though it is beautiful almost beyone description, I'll try anyway. The Saddleback Leather Classic Briefcase! A magnificent portmanteau luggage! It is the apex of baggage. I imagine the angelic host might use Saddleback Leather bags to convey divine messages from the eternal realm to our mortal veil if needed, though theirs would no doubt have little wings and never get dirty. Polyester filament marine-grade thread! The inevitable and inescapable progress of man! That sentence contains a tautology. Leather bags and packs have existed since the dawn of humanity. No doubt the form and function were devised by some enlightened ancestor who, in eons past, was the first leather artisan whoâ"s subtle genius furthered civilization as the anonymous mystic progenitor of Saddleback Leather. Behold the soft sussuration of the classic briefcase as it cleaves the weft of worlds! Without my briefcase I am half of two abysses: a well staring at the night sky. Good luck, noble folk, and Godspeed in your quest to symbiotically embrace a Saddleback Leather Classic Briefcase!

    Oh my, the memories

I purchased the large Classic Briefcase about four weeks ago. My brother calls it a "man bag", but every time he sees it he wants to smell the bag. He may not know why, but I do. It is the memories of youth brought back. The first thing I do whenever I pick the bag up is smell the leather. Nellie Fox and Roy Sievers fill my mind and I am transported back to those days of playing summer work-up games with my Nellie fielders glove and Roy first base glove. Used those same gloves for the rest of my playing days, Babe Ruth, high school and college. What the hell does this all mean? I don' t know for sure, but I do still have those gloves after 48 years and hope to have this bag at least as long. Being 62 that will not happen, but I do know this bag has brought more feelings and memories and future memories than anything I have purchased since those gloves. Thank you Saddleback folks, there just may be magic in your bags..

    Remarkable

I discovered Saddleback during an internet search looking for high quality leather bags. I had been looking on eBags, but despite some expensive bags, I didn't see anything that would differentiate itself from the existing leather briefcase that was sitting next to me, frayed and disintegrating. I must admit that at first seeing the price of the bags, I wasn't going to seriously consider purchasing one. I stayed on the site more out of personal interest in the owner's story, and his somewhat zany approach to selling through the use of story. I was soon hooked. And here's why". If you've ever seen the TED Talk by Simon Sinek, "Start With Why," then you'll understand where I'm coming from. The bags were inspired and created with a "why" in mind, and it is effectively communicated throughout the site. Further, it is effectively demonstrated in the quality of the product (something I can now attest to). Aside from the utilitarianism of just desiring a functional and long-lasting bag, those that should consider this, are probably asking themselves, "What happened to the days when family heirlooms were the normal purchases of yesteryear that just never quit and never got tossed out?" Let me give an example: I have a 65 year old ToastMaster toaster that I inherited from my long-since passed away grandparents. It was a wedding gift to them. It's a gem. It works wonderfully. And it wasn't created as a high end luxury item under the pretense that it would last forever. It just lasted forever because it was well made and well cared for. And now I have it. Simple as that. I requested that toaster from the family estate, and I was fortunate to get it. Perhaps it's a stretch to position something proactively as a generational heirloom, but in a world where everything is continually mass-produced, and easily and quickly replaced, it's refreshing that someone has decided to take a decidedly different approach. A well crafted piece that is thoughtfully designed, rugged, and made in such a way that it pays a decent wage to the person whose hands made it is indeed a novel concept today. And the more time I spent on the website, the more I felt obliged to purchase this bag. I don't know if anybody will fight over anything of mine when I'm dead, but I'd give this bag a better chance of it than anything else I currently own. Now on to the bag, itself. It was quite heavy"as was expected. This is not a detraction, just an observation. I bought the large size because I was looking for a workhorse that could handle the gear I take with me when I travel. This usually involves a laptop and charger, an iPad, various toiletries, and a varying amount of paper in a file. Oh, and a stainless steel travel coffee mug. This bag fits the bill. I know you're expecting me to say that I got all kinds of immediate complements on the bag. But it's true. The very first day that I had it I got no less than 5 separate complements around the office. It's truly an attractive bag and a bit of a conversation piece. I have to admit here, though, I'm a bit sheepish about admitting to anyone how much I paid for it. I just don't strike myself as enough of a high-roller to spend this much on a bag. But there you have it" I bought one of Dave's Deals"a 10% off piece. After careful inspection, I couldn't find one flaw. I'm not sure if it was a mistake to send me this one, or if I'm just not familiar enough with what it should look like to know the difference. Bottom line: I'm extremely satisfied. A couple of minor cons. I'm a short guy, at around 5'7". I think the shoulder strap, if fully extended, would have the bag dangling at my ankle. In order to adjust it properly I have a tremendous amount of excess strap just hanging down the side of the bag. This is fairly minor, and it is probably the trade-off for being able to convert it into a backpack (a nifty feature, to be sure). The cup/bottle holders on the side could be just a tad more accomodating. Most water bottles and travel mugs seem to be around the 3 to 3.25" inch diameter range. And that's a real stretch here. I am able to get my stainless steel mug in there, but it's not an easy task. On the plus side, no one will be mugging me of my coffee! I'm hoping that after much use it will stretch out a bit. A final note. I'm an impatient person. I'm the guy who's tempted to buy something "distressed" so that it has that worn in feel. Because I sense that things that are worn in have more intrinsic value. I've contemplated this recently, and I look forward to breaking this bag in over many years; not through artifical means or overly hard use. I think it is in the use of the bag itself that it's value is obtained, and it's signs of wear are simply the outward manifestations of many years of loving use. Thanks, Dave, for a truly remarkable product. And thank you, as well, for your passion and your ministry.

    Memorable

I travel the Midwest for work. I wanted something durable but nice - but I never expected so many comments. But not because it is ostentatious - because it is so cool. People immediately comment on the quality and ask if it is new. I reply nope and it gets better and better over time. My main goal was not to be everybody else with the same cheesy bags. So I will admit I was totally impressed in the extreme high quality of this bag. Begrudgingly I recommend it but not too much because I like being unique! In fact once on a plane the guy in the middle row looked down and saw my bag on the left and the thinner version on the guy to the right. He was sold by the end of the flight.
