Our leather is the strongest we can find (full-grain leather). It still has all of the grain on it. We line the leather briefcase with pigskin for even more strength. The thread is unbelievably strong industrial marine grade UV resistant polyester thread, and our custom hardware is 316 Stainless Steel. It's the metal of choice when your life depends on it. We consider every single detail when making a leather bag guaranteed to last 100 years.
Our Thin Front Pocket Briefcase is made out of the toughest, full-grain leather. This is the top layer of the hide and has all of the grain, making it tougher and more water-resistant. Most companies will use a cheaper, thinner leather that is easy to process and falls apart in a few years.
The natural color of Tobacco (tan, light brown) might be the most common. It has a casual look but develops a beautiful patina over time. Some people prefer a different style, so for those, we also offer this leather in Dark Coffee Brown and Chestnut (reddish brown).

I've owned this work of art & craftsmanship for just over a month, but it's already been on 6 airplanes and it hasn't even started to get broken in yet. I'm an entrepreneur and have to constantly be in meetings and working at co-working offices or coffee shops (main office is at home), so I needed something that I can use for my every day carry (EDC) and also when I go on trips, I could basically bring my office with me. After one month of use, I will say that this company's reputation stands firm. I have owned many leather goods over the years, and this one is by far the highest quality leather item I've ever owned. I am also very impressed with how much stuff I can put in it. I realized that I needed to stretch it out a bit, so I fit in one of my wife's nursing books which is huge and heavy, a couple of journals in there as well and I let it sit for a couple of days. I did the same with the front pockets and the leather finally started to stretch to its real capacity.
The bag is very well made. It has some weight but is not as heavy as I was expecting. From my experience, typically messenger bags are not as structured. This bag is firm and will take awhile to loosen up. Great size and quality. Customer service is excellent.
I bought my first SBL bag almost 10 years ago. I have been in love, addicted and obsessed at first sight and smell! I received this bag for my birthday from my wife. She knew that I really wanted a briefcase to carry things to and from our new business. She did not have to search or research to know exactly which briefcase to get me. I have had this bag for years and had originally bought it to commemorate when I first entered healthcare. It has served me faithfully since. Till this day, I get compliments on it by passerbys. Leather wears over time, which is the beauty and crux of it. The wear I am referring to is the stretching of the leather holding the D-ring on the side meant for the strap. Parts that are likely to receive more stress are reinforced, whether by copper rivet, heavy stitching, or embedded nylon straps. I am disappointed that I cannot use the side D-ring to clip my strap on to without having the D-ring rotate out of position. I buy Saddleback products because I know they are quality products, but the few times they fell short of baseline expectations.
Okay, so let's get a few things out of the way here. This isn't a bag for whiners. It's heavy. You have to buckle and unbuckle it to get at stuff. And why the hell are you wearing your briefcase as a backpack and wondering why it's not perfect for that? Give me a break. With all that out of the way, here's what this is: a beautiful piece of craftsmanship that you'll enjoy every time you pick it up. A real statement. Every time you lay it down on the conference table and start unbuckling it, you're saying "I'll take over from here." And every time you buckle it back up and sling it over your shoulder, you're saying, "we're done for today." This bag reminds you of the days when people squared up, did real thinking, and got work done - versus wasting time "tweeting" about their latest lavender aromatherapy.
