    Buyer Beware

As a Saddleback fanatic, this marks the first occasion in which I'm truly disappointed with an item. In terms of functionality, there is very little. I purchased the small model, as I own a 13" MacBook Pro with retina display. As another customer wrote, there is a solid half inch of space between your computer and the sleeve all around. It's completely loose. If you turn it upside down or tilt it, your laptop WILL fall out. I previously owned the sleeve for the 13" MacBook Pro without retina (and that computer), and it was not like this. It fit very snugly and was clearly crafted specifically for that device. Not this one, though. Aesthetically, it's "uglier," too. Hideous, honestly. It just seems like this was a very rushed design. The seam goes straight down the middle of the sleeve and the bottom is just sort of awkwardly sewn shut. Again, the previous model was nothing like this. It had a classy elegance to it. . .like something you'd expect from Saddleback. This one looks like a knockoff. My final complaint is probably unique to my case, but it's certainly worth mentioning. Saddleback has become relaxed in what pieces of leather they use with regards to what they call "markings" (I call them outright blemishes, but that's a whole other diatribe). I order all of my Saddleback stuff in chestnut, and they're usually pretty good about selecting nicer pieces for that particular color. Actually, I've never seen a single "marking" on a product until now, and I've owned over ten items. The sleeve I received is utterly covered in blemishes. With no hyperbole, this cow lived a ROUGH life. It doesn't look like leather; it looks like it was made from Ray Charles' skin. Very disappointing. If you buy this, you will most likely be displeased. It's the one Saddleback product I deem unworthy of the monetary cost. I hope Dave goes back to the old design (but made for retina models) and includes some sort of a discount promotion if you exchange this one--it's that bad. Truly.

    Better than expected

I got this on the 25% off Dave's Deal and I can't find a thing wrong with it. Some of the other reviews say it's too loose, I don't know if there is some variance in how they are made but mine is perfectly snug with my 15" Retina MacBook Pro. Doesn't fall out if I turn it upside down or anything, but not hard to remove either. I actually like this design with the seam on the bottom instead of the sides too, it'll add some impact protection to the bottom if I were to drop it. Fits perfect inside the large briefcase. I wasn't going to buy it because my laptop won't last nearly as long as it, but with the deal I went for it and I'm glad I did. You can always use it to hold papers or files inside the briefcase once your laptop is long gone...

Everyone at law school is jealous.

What's not to love? Perfectly simple design, functions perfectly, perfect quality. And let me tell you, when you're sitting around a conference table and everyone else pulls out their weird, filthy neoprene cover that wears its battle scars like ... well ... battle scars, there's no comparison. All eyes on you with your gorgeous, patinated warrior. Your laptop's devoted bodyguard. Also doubles as a heat pad-- the laptop fits perfectly within the raised edges of the case when you set the laptop on top of it. Gorgeous. Worth every penny, it's been within arms reach of me for over a year. Love it.

    Beautiful Case

This is simply a beautiful case. I suppose it's subjective, looking at the reviews. It's simple, it has no complicated fasteners or design, and some people don't like the seam on the bottom. I think it looks great inside my messenger, along with my medium notepad. While it's not exactly a drop case, it does keep the MacBook from mixing with some of the other loose items in the bag. The other reviews are correct: it is not a snug fit, and it will fall out if you hold it upside down. Don't do that. I suppose that makes it more of a slipcover than a case. But like I said, it protects the laptop from scrapes and scratches while it's traveling in a larger case, which is why I picked it up. That, and it looks incredible. Picked up a chestnut one on a 25% Dave's Deal. I don't see them on there often, so I jumped at the chance after I picked up a new MacBook Pro. I cannot find the flaw! Dave's Deals are a great way of stepping outside of your comfort zone in terms of colors. I started off with all tobacco brown, but some deals popped up with items I wanted but were in DCB or chestnut, and I have to say all Saddleback colors are excellent, and they stand out even more when you mix and match. There's something so pleasing about the tobacco messenger with the DCB notepad and chestnut laptop case, and I imagine that similar combinations would be just as nice.

    Good, but shy of great

I own quite a few Saddleback Leather products and love them all. I recently upgraded my MacBook Air (for which I had a SBL sleeve). I purchased this sleeve in the small size for my new MBP Retina 13". After reading the reviews here I wasn't sure how the sleeve would fit. When it arrived, I opened the package and inhaled looking for that great leather smell. Boy was I surprised! All I smelled was a very strong solvent smell - no leather smell. Then I put the MacBook in the sleeve. As other reviewers have noted, the sleeve had about .5 inch extra width. However, the sleeve still looks good and fits well in my Medium Round Satchel, so it works fine. In fact I like the way I can get the laptop out pretty easily. I wish the sleeve felt a bit more tailored like the sleeve for the MBA. So I'm deducting 1 star for the nasty smell and less than the fit I've come to expect from SBL.
