Say YES to Function

Answer YES or NO honestly about your current camera bag

● Can it be worn across the chest for easy access and converted to a backpack for trekking?
● Is it insulative so batteries and gear don’t quickly freeze or get damaged with heat?
● Would you use it as your everyday carry when not taking pictures?
● Does it enhance the way you look as a photographer?
● Can you leave it unbuckled or unzipped for hours without gear falling out because it has a flap?

Say NO to Eye Pollution

Answer Yes or No about your current camera bag

● Would someone ever paint it into a painting?
● Is it photogenic? Would it ever be the subject of the photograph in Venice or out in nature?
● Is it classy?
● Is it attractive? Does it attract the eye of others?
● Does it get better looking the longer you have it? Or does it age like milk.
● Would your grandchildren fight over it when you’re dead?
● Would it enhance your photos if it were in the shot? Or be photoshopped out like a piece of trash.
● Does anyone compliment you on how good looking it is?
● Does it make you look better?
● Does it reflect who you are?
● Does your other camera bag age like fine wine?  or like old milk?
● Are you excited about it? Or it is boring.
● Are you proud of it?

Say YES to Joy

Answer Yes or No about your current camera bag

● Are you emotionally attached to it?
● Would you miss it if you lost the bag itself?
● Does it look like it has stories to tell?
● Do you ever intentionally rough it up to make it look better?
● Will people take pictures of your camera bag?
● Would people ask to borrow your camera bag empty?
● Has it ever brought you joy and enhanced your life?
● Will this ever be said about it? “This was your grandfather’s or grandmother’s camera bag and now it’s yours.

FAQs and Objections

● What about protection if I drop it? My other camera bag has a lot of foam in it.
    ○ Let the padding on the bottom be a small blanket or light sweatshirt for just in case situations.
● But it’s not big enough for all of my gear.
    ○ It’s not meant to hold ALL of your gear. Do you only have one pair of shoes? Leave the 35 lb. camera bag in the hotel room and carry this for smaller fun outings or on long treks.
● What about dust and rain getting in? Buckle it down and it’ll be fine.      You’re overthinking it unless you’re using it in the blowing sands of the Sahara. Then just put a t-shirt on top of it and then buckle it down. And don’t carry it through waterfalls.
● Why did you rename it the Photographer’s Satchel?
     ○ 15 years ago, it was named The Medium Satchel. 10 years ago, I redesigned it for more comfort and renamed it The Rounded Satchel. Since so many photographers buy it and send in great photos of it, and because it’s what our photographers and videographers personally carry at Saddleback, it became obvious and appropriate that it be renamed The Photographer’s Satchel.

Justification To Spend the Money

● Even a cheap crap lens costs more than this bag, which is a key part of your gear.
● It’s cheaper to buy one bag than replace bags for the rest of your life.
● Don’t mess up other people’s photos with your ugly or boring camera bag.
● Two bags in one. Most camera bags are dedicated to being used for only cameras, but this is a fashion accessory meant to be used for daily use when not out shooting.
● Photographers are drawn to beautiful and interesting things to capture so others can enjoy them too. Why would you own a not beautiful or interesting camera bag?
● We pay more money to have a room with a beautiful view. We spend a lot of time and money to drive or fly to beautiful, faraway nature or look into the Grand Canyon and then return home. We take a lot of time and effort to hide powerlines, cords, trash, and other things that aren’t natural or that just don’t fit. Creatives love good-looking things. That’s why they congregate in beautiful places and paint or photograph beautiful things. Why would a photographer carry an ugly camera bag on their side unless they just couldn’t find a beautiful one? You now have no excuse.

    Photographer's Satchel

Recently I ordered a Tobacco Brown Photographer's Satchel, however when it arrived it was not what I expected. The color was darker than depicted, the finish felt sueded rather than smooth and there were some workmanship defects. I called Customer Support and spoke to Jan. She took my disappointment seriously and said "We certainly don't want you to have a bag you're not completely satisfied with", then walked me through the exchange process. A few days later I called to verify that SBL received the original satchel and I spoke to Fallon. She verified that it had been received and assured me that the new exchange bag would be checked and double checked before it was sent out. Several days later it arrived and as promised it was flawless and exactly what I hoped for (only in Coffee Brown which I requested). 5 stars for this very excellent piece of leathercraft. By the way, nobody is going to fight over it when I'm dead because I'm taking it with me! Jan and Fallon both also merit 5 stars each. They were efficient, courteous, professional and actually cared that I got a satchel I would be happy with. Dave Munson, if you read this review, and you should, these two ladies deserve recognition for a job well done.

    Over the Moon

Just received my Photographer's Satchel and it's everything I'd hoped. Not too big that you're tempted to stuff everything you own into it - not too small so you're able to accommodate the necessities you bought it for. It's the perfect size for a guy (or gal) wanting a small bag to daily-carry, or function as a light camera bag - that doesn't look like a purse (not that there's anything wrong with that...). For camera use, my F, F2's (both DE-1 non-metered prism finder and the larger F2AS) and F3's fit fine mounted with a period-50mm lens & hood. And there's still plenty of room for a small gadget bag and some film. Because I don't like carrying a lot in my pockets I've envied women's ability to pull off a purse. When not loaded with cameras it's a great every day carry bag. It'll hold sunglasses, keys, billfold, phone, a large, Shinola journal, Pn'A's Sendak Mini with fountain pens, a slim-line bible and/or plenty of other daily-use necessities... everything you'd need for a day at the coffee shop or client meeting - without putting a permanent crook in your neck or back. It stands upright when set down (you'll want to be careful about the surface it's placed on with those cool metal rings on the bottom). The strap is substantial - and plenty long. I'll usually carry it cross-body (not as a backpack), so cinched the strap up nice and short, resulting in a fairly long pig-tail at the end. You'll want to be careful not to put your phone in the external pockets because the stainless hardware will take its toll banging against it. Fortunately the phone fits perfectly in the inner end-pocket, and if you have wireless CarPlay everything just works properly when you climb in to drive. This bag is a little hefty and a little stiff when new - but that's OK by me. I went with the dark version and it's absolutely gorgeous. And the smell when you open the packaging is intoxicating... in a good way. Here's to years of use breaking it in. Thanks Saddleback for bringing this guy back. He's my new best buddy.

The Satchel which is rightly called Photographers Satchel

I have the Satchel since a year now and love it. Yes, it is a bit heavy like all the Saddleback (overenginered) products but its worth carrying. When I bought it, it was still just called "Satchel". But i often use it with a padded inlay from Amazon for my Canon R5 or Leica Q3. Both fit well with a single lens. The outer pockets are great for two small insulated bottles (one for water, one for coffee)! Highly recommend as EDC or travel companion! Will try this year in Columbia to use it more as a small backback! Appreciate the "conversion" possiblity and therefore: a highly recommended product.

    My Goldilocks satchel

I want to say this bag is awesome. There is enough space for my EDC. And I like functionality and beauty. Tobacco to me is that rugged and beautiful, like Zena Warrior Princess (Y’All can really tell my age lol). I can even attach my travel leather satchel to this bag for extra storage, which is awesome and great in itself (A Plus Dave, your the man). I do want to give my opinion on something though. I have several tobacco colored leathers from SBL. They are all darker than what some of the pictures show on the website. If Y’All can put a disclaimer that the color may vary and be different from what is shown, that would allow potential customers to have room in their expectations. Either way stay BLESSED Y’ALL.

    Built Tough

I'm a nurse and I've carried this bag every day to work for well over a year now. It's a perfect size for all my gear. It gets thrown around a lot, and I get into it all day long. It barely looks used yet. I had been looking at this for a while, and finally pulled the trigger. Best decision I've made in a long time! Hardly a day goes by where someone doesn't compliment this bag, as well.
