Design of the Front Pocket Leather Backpack

There is no luck in making a quality leather backpack. And this leather backpack with pockets is no exception. It was purposefully designed with no breakable parts like zippers, snaps, or velcro. And any stress spot is reinforced with Polyester straps hidden beneath the leather and riveted. The body of this leather backpack is built with just two big pieces of leather, which means there aren't many seams. The fewer the seams, the stronger the backpack because backpacks come apart at the seams before anywhere else. And then we only sew 5 stitches per inch, so there are as few holes as possible. Quality can be measured in Seam Feet (how few feet of seams a bag has. We made that term up).

Materials used to create this Leather Backpack with Pockets

This backpack is made out of strong materials. The full grain leather is very tough and more resistant to water. The lining is made from pigskin, which is even stronger than cowhide. The hardware is made from 316 Stainless Steel, which is very strong and will not rust. The thread used to sew the backpack together is Polyester, which does not deteriorate in the sun as nylon thread does.

Full Grain Leather

The leather of this backpack is the strongest and most water-resistant we can find (full grain), and then we line it with pigskin, which is stronger than the cow skin. It's rare for a low-quality company to use full grain to make a leather backpack because it's so expensive. When I say "Full Grain Leather" I mean that it still has all of the tough, tightly woven fibers on the top of the hide.

A Genuine Leather Backpack is Missing the Strength

Most companies shave off the scars and blemishes from the top of the hide (watch how they shave it here at minute 6:30) and shave off the strongest and best part of the hide (the grain) while doing it. They shave it down to genuine leather. They do it, so they don't have to cut around the marks and throw those pieces into the trash as we do. We throw away 25% of the hide. They don't throw hardly anything away. But since it still has leather, they can call it a genuine leather backpack. It will not last nearly as long and is missing the beauty.

A Vegan Leather Backpack is Plastic Garbage

Vegan leather is ridiculous. It doesn't even make sense. It's usually polyurethane or PVC, which is a plastic. Do you want to wear a plastic backpack? No? We don't want you to either. You and I both know that will not last longer than your carebear backpack as a kid.

Seriously Strong Hardware in this Leather Backpack with Pockets

I know using 316 Stainless Steel custom hardware is kind of like killing a fly with a shotgun, but we did it anyways. Check that one off the list of potential problems. Our large pieces of hardware on our backpacks are rated strong enough to hold a 750 lb. bag of cats before it gives. Seriously, I hope you google it to understand more. If your life is going to depend on any metal, let it depend on 316 Stainless Steel.

The Best Thread to Hold it all Together

We sew it all together with thick and strong Polyester thread. It's industrial strength and doesn't deteriorate with exposure to the Sun's UV rays like Nylon thread does. This Leather Backpack is very strong from the nature of the materials we use.

From a Brown Leather Backpack, to a Black Leather Backpack, you have options

We know not everyone has the same style. So this leather backpack with pockets comes in four different colors. The light tan color (called Tobacco) develops a beautiful patina over time. There's also Dark Coffee Brown, Chestnut (reddish brown), and Black. So find the style that will suit you.

Very Spacious Main Compartment

The interior main compartment has enough space for your 17" laptop, a charger, other electronic gear, some personal items, your passport, a book, or possibly a few books. You could probably even fit a monkey in there if you had to. But we wouldn't recommend that. This is a very durable leather bag with plenty of room.

Adjustable Shoulder Straps

We want this leather backpack to be easy to carry on and off your back. So we made the most comfortable straps that are easily adjustable. This makes for easy access as you take it off to grab something out and toss it back on your back.

    My Birthday Bag

My hubby purchased this bag for me. I have used it as a cross body style purse, a farmers market bag, to carry my grocery store hauls, on day trips, overnight trips, scrapbooking retreats, it's been taken to sports outings- you name it. The first time I placed items in it and did not "roll down" the top, it flipped over and spilled the contents onto the ground. However, that was my fault. Apparently a 15 inch macbook and other items aren't intended to be slung over one shoulder like a regular purse. LOL. I use this bag almost daily because of it's versatility. During our harsh snow storms I have full confidence that my items inside stay protected from the elements.

    My bottomless pit "purse"

I absolutely LOVE this bag! I bought this bag in the Medium Tobacco Brown last February for my birthday and I'm in love! I use this bag as a an everyday purse. I cut the four sides of the lining and just kept the bottom part for durability (it makes the bag less bulky and heavy). I have a lot of designer bags and I love that this bag costs about as much, but is much better quality. I love the thickness of the leather, the durability, and the design. Honestly, my two Saddleback bags are my favorite bags (I also have the 2012 small briefcase in Carbon Black) . I own roughly 20 or more leather designer bags/purses (I'm a woman who collects bags :). The Saddleback bags are the BEST! For Christmas, I'm buying myself another Medium Dry Bag in Carbon! Suzette, I hope you have more designs coming out for the ladies because you definitely have the market!!

Older Model, but 3 years later

I bought the large backpack in 2015 while I was deployed to Romania. I went through the rest of that deployment (with a great deal of traveling using the backpack), a trip to California, a month and a half traveling through Europe, and now 2 years of a Master's in the Netherlands with this backpack. I use it every time I leave my room, and have traveled multiple times using this as a carry-on and no other baggage. Here are my takes: The bag works well as a carry-on. I prefer putting it under the seat in front of me so I have access to my items without bugging other passengers. I typically leave the front and side pockets empty for this, so it fits better. My last travel was with a 17" gaming laptop, clothes for a weekend, and some smaller gaming systems, with space to spare (though now that some airlines are weighing bags, that became an issue, mostly due to the heavy laptop). This bag will work as a carry-on, and I don't believe I have yet had any airline ask me to put it in one of their test boxes for size. My biggest issue with this is that my closure for the large flap is on the front pocket, making it stick out a bit, which causes it to be harder to squeeze under the seat in front of me. I see that the new bag has moved it, solving this issue. There is a lot of space in this bag. My initial travel through Europe looking at universities left me with about 45 days of this bag holding EVERYTHING I needed . Laptop, clothes, sleeping bag, nice set of shoes, notepad folder, and occasionally a large amount of food. I don't think I have yet to have a time that I've needed to use the last hole on the closure strap. The spaces between the side pockets are great for holding my water bottle and e-reader. I rarely even use the front pocket. About that... As mentioned, the model I have has the large flap's closure buckle on the front pocket. This is inconvenient, as to properly open the font pocket, three buckles need to be undone, including the main flap. This is the biggest reason I don't use the front pocket. Again, the closure has moved, so this issue has been lessened (it is still 2 buckles compared to the single buckle on the sides, but the width of this pocket warrants the two. On the issue of problems I have with my bag, the bottom of the bag has developed a bit of a crease that digs into my lower back, depending on the load in the bag. I don't think they've solved this yet, but I'm not sure how I would. I use some of the tighter settings on the shoulder straps, and this has left quite a bit hanging off the bottom. This may be because the same straps are (or were) used for the smaller and the larger bag, so the larger bag didn't need the extra strap length. I remedied this by folding the hanging ends under and buckling them in as well (so the buckle goes through both the very end of the hanging end, as well as the appropriate hole for the size. My main buckle was damaged when a friend was trying to pull it out of an overhead compartment on a plane, it got caught and the rind just pulled too hard, bending it. It is still completely functional, and I could probably send it in to get it fixed, but it isn't bothering me enough yet. I do wish mine had a separate laptop sleeve and inner pockets, bu t again, I see they've added these to the new bag. With all the improvements, I'm almost tempted to get a new one. I got mine from Dave's Deals, and have no idea what issues they noticed to make it cheaper. I just conditioned the leather, I use a brand other than Chamberlains, but other than the softness and slack of the leather (which is not present when it is new), I don't think you could tell that I've had this bag for 3 years if you were more than 5 feet away. This review was me being picky about the bad parts of the bag. It is a great bag, I love wearing it and using it daily, and would highly recommend the bag. Chances are, in three years, you won't have the weight in the bag that I've had for the amount of time that I did, and its no worse for the wear.
