Read MoreThis is the 4th Edition of the Squared Leather Backpack and has been refined over the years to what it is now. You'll see old pictures with a fat flat handle, but the new one is high and thinner. And it's still over-engineered. It has no breakable parts like buttons, magnets, or zippers and it's still reinforced with rivets through and hidden polyester strapping at all stress points. In addition, this newest edition of this leather backpack is made from only two large solid pieces of leather instead of three, which means that there are fewer seams on this backpack to tear apart. This leather backpack has a laptop pocket on the front exterior and one in the back that can fit a 17" laptop. Both tall side pockets have a hidden pocket behind them for quick access or for sticking in longer things. The lower and side d-rings on the backpack are great for securing on tripods, blankets, and or dirty and wet shoes. The shoulder straps are minimal, but with a comfortable and adjustable shoulder pad to distribute the backpack's weight where you need it.
---Full-grain leather is the strongest and most water-resistant leather you can use for a backpack, and we use the thick version of it. Like boot leather, but a tad thicker. Then we line it with pigskin, which is tougher than cow leather. Finally, we sew the leather backpack together with a very expensive German industrial marine-grade polyester thread that doesn't deteriorate in the sun as nylon thread does. The hardware is our custom 316 Stainless Steel hardware. I believe we are the only company in the world using such strong hardware to make a leather backpack. The buckles can hold up to a 750 lb. bag of cats without breaking. It's kind of like killing a fly with a shotgun, but I tell you this, you'll never have a problem with hardware breaking on your backpack. If it does break, it'll either be an excellent story or an unfortunate one.
---There are many advantages of a leather backpack. Let us start with a full grain leather bag will develop a beautiful patina over time and tell your story. The more you use this backpack, the better it looks. This will also protect your belongings from the elements better than some synthetic material. Full grain is the most water-resistant, so a little rain won't hurt it. That's what you get with high quality leather goods. Another significant advantage of our Squared Leather Backpack is that it's virtually impossible to tear.
---This Tank of a backpack is not for the faint of heart. It's big but not pretentious, and it's built to last. This is the one if you're searching for a leather backpack that will allow you to haul around your 17-inch laptop and gear easily. It's also perfect for traveling as it fits everything you need.
---You should not have problems getting through TSA with this as your carry-on backpack. It's a perfect size and has plenty of room for everything you need while still being small enough not to be a pain. This is an excellent backpack for a fun weekend trip, or work trip, with enough room for your laptop plus maybe a change of clothes, and whatever other gear you might need.
I'm thinking, "time, give me time, give me one more moment in time...," but I digress and I know, I know the last thing you want is to hear me sing--even if it is just in my own head. When I first recieved this bag, I was like--MAN, this bag is huge! It was days before a trip oversees and I just didn't have the time and inclination to return it for something smaller. I, then, therefore decided to risk it and try my luck hoping the airline agents wouldn't bark at its heft and try to check it. In the end, all my worries came to naught as I seemlessly navigated my way through terminal to terminal and the Squared Backpack and me triumphed through our voyage and its christening as a world traveller. It's been weeks now since that rocky introduction like two lonely souls meeting apprehensively for the first time and turning into a love that is genuine and timeless. Okay, okay...you don't want me to muse on romance either? I hear ya', this stuff turns my stomach too. My point is, after the intitial breaking in period of a few weeks, what was once cumbersome, uncomfortable and unweildy has morphed into a different animal. This bag now feels like it was custom made for my back. It now comforms to the curves--and man do I have manly curves--of my back. It is a true pleasure to carry. In fact, I am now noticing that I'm adopting narcissisistic tendencies losing myself in time and gazing in deep admiration at myself, er--the bag, before mirrors. Thanks Saddleback team for introducing us, we will send you a pic of our first child. Loving her, Peter C.

I have traveled across the globe with this backpack. China, Cambodia, Thailand, UAE, Afghanistan and more. I must say this is a bullet proof bag that is always with me pretty much every day of my life for the past several years. She carries everything I need and I will never need another carry on/computer bag again! One thing that happens all the time is how many people stop me in the airport to compliment me on the bag and ask where I got it. I almost wish I had a way to track how many of the hundreds actually went and got gear from Saddleback. I now have several Saddleback items and am contemplating my next buy. Thanks for making such a great line of products

When I received and opened up this backpack just before starting my final semester of undergrad studies, I instantly knew this pack and I were going to be in for some awesome adventures for a long damn time to come. 6 months, one tumble off of the motorcycle, an attempted escape down a talus slope, at least one full thermos of coffee and countless minor encounters with trees, rocks and the labrador puppy later, this bag and I are just getting warmed up. I've never had a bag of this quality before, and I admittedly own too many backpacks. While I do own packs that are either slimmer, lighter or larger, none occupy the niche that the square backpack has carved out for itself. As best as I can put it, it's the labrador retriever of backpacks -while others species may have it outstripped at certain attributes by default, you will not find a more well rounded specimen the world over. Nor will you find one that is ready to be at your side (well, in this case on your back) through absolutely anything. After using it daily, I've found this pack aptly handles an academic loadout: a notebook, my iPad (in a thick foam case), engineer's pad, pencils, pens, map markers, sharpies, rulers, compass, calculator, planner, structural geology textbook, research papers, tracing paper (for stereonets) and other miscellaneous school stuff with no problem. It also has no problem holding my day-trip field gear: rock hammers (sledge and pick), field books, sample bags, Brunton, at least two water bottles, the rain shell, binoculars, markers, and a couple of samples that I've whacked off of an outcrop. The durability of the backpack astounds, as I made the mistake of lashing it to the back of my motorcycle to accommodate a lovely lady and it took a leap at about 35 mph, fully loaded. NOTHING inside was hurt and the bag has some cosmetic scratches from the unavoidable road rash. Some stitching was rubbed off in addition to the blemishes on the leather, so after some superglue delivered via hypodermic needle, melting with a lighter, and a leather linament rubdown this tank is still running like a champ - but now with character. In summary, Saddleback has created a gem of a backpack in a world increasingly contaminated with absolute crap. Some people gripe about this bag's weight. I say get tougher. Some people jab "Was that made in World War I?" I reply "If it were, it would still be under warranty." Others shiver when they see the cost. I tell them that it's the last backpack I'll ever own and I'll ask them how much they've spent 30 years from now. This backpack was a huge purchase for a college senior but it is one that I have made without a minute of regret. If anyone wants pictures of the bag post-crash, or has any questions, email me at [email protected] and I'll be more than happy to add to this review.

I've had the Dark Tobacco backpack for about a year now. I can honestly say that for backpacks, it's the best investment that you could ever make. I was originally worried about what my wife would say, but I was going through a backpack a year anyway and she's now happy that we don't have to spend money on them anymore! There's an old saying...you get what you pay for. In this case it's true. I will have to buy my son one however because in our case he doesn't want to wait until I'm dead to have it! Thanks! Jay

I have a lot of saddleback stuff, but this gets the most attention. Every day someone asks me about or want to check it out. It's a beautiful piece, and my wife even lets me leave it out, which is saying something. It's built like a tank, has plenty of compartments and d rings. That said, it's *very* heavy for a backpack. It's also not as spacious as it appears. It's best for things like laptops or other things that can stack. -- books, iPads, notebooks, etc. would not be good for things like clothing as the bag is fairly stubborn about keeping its box shape and doesn't really "break in" like other saddleback bags, and it's not the most comfortable thing in the world. As such, it's not a very versatile bag, but man is it an eye catcher and all your friends will want one. As a fashion accessory, it's a 10. Judging it just as a backpack, it gets a 10 for build quality and durability, a 5 for utility and a 3 for comfort. If you're only carting around a laptop and notepad from point A to B, there's no more stylish way to do it. If you're out sightseeing or carrying all day, your back will thank you if you pick a lighter pack.
