Read MoreThe high-quality materials used in this leather portfolio make it worth the investment. The full grain leather is extremely tough and water-resistant, while the pigskin lining is even stronger than the cowhide used for the outer layer. The German industrial marine grade polyester thread is extremely durable and resistant to wear and tear. The stitching is done in such a way that avoids any damage or tearing to the leather. Think about the number of great first impressions you'll make carrying this portfolio.
---Imagine the cow is killed and skinned. Imagine that... Now the thick hide goes to the tannery, but it's so thick that the tannery splits it in half, the top from the bottom, and now has two hides to sell. The top hide has all of the grain on it (Full Grain). All of the real tough and water resistant dense fibers. Grain is to a hide of leather what shingles are to a roof. Leather portfolios and padfolios made with this leather will last at least a few generations. And we use thick full grain leather. Thicker than boot leather.
---The bottom half is a hide called Split or Genuine leather. It dries out quickly and stains easily because the protective layer of grain is gone. Low quality leather padfolio makers will stick some lipstick on that leather and sell you a nice and pretty leather portfolio tomorrow.
---We glue and sew pigskin lining to the back of that already tough full grain leather. And pigskin is stronger than cowskin. This makes our leather portfolios twice as strong as a typical full grain leather portfolio.
---We sew our leather portfolio with an extremely strong German industrial marine grade polyester that won't fall apart or wear away easily. They use this German thread when it just has to last, or someone could die, like for parachutes and sails on ships. And our thread for the padfolio is the thick double ought version.
---A sewing machine is actually a perforation machine. If the needle holes are too close together, then the leather of the portfolio will tear like a perforated piece of paper. So, we sew at no more than five stitches per inch, which gets the holes further apart from each other on the padfolio.
---The side that holds the paper is only sewn on the right and bottom sides of the portfolio. It's designed to slide in a typical 8 ½ x 11 letter size, European A4 notepad from above or a spiral notebook from the side since that flap is sewn only on two sides.
---This leather portfolio is built with just one solid piece of leather to reduce seams. This is because seams are where, if there's going to be a problem, it will begin there. Yes, we took every detail into account to make this sleek notebook holder perfect.
I've had my larger notepad holder for about a month and I almost want to baby it! It's the perfect size for me, feels great, smells great (hey now!), and just looks great. I let my other leather (SBL and others) get beat up because they look nice after scratches and a good conditioning, but I find myself taking care of this notepad holder more than I should... It's not as heavy as others had said or complained about. Some complain about it being so stiff they can hardly get anything in - mine wasn't as stiff. I have two Economist magazines in the large pocket, some papers in the smaller one, some business cards in the card slots, and no pen in the pen loop (probably won't ever even use that). My only complaint is that I wish it would've had a side pocket where the notepad goes, similar to that in the smaller sized notepad holder. Your options in which types of notepads to use in this notepad holder are somewhat limited by this. In the end, I think I'll make it work (Rhodia does sell wirebound pads that will fit in here), but that could've been different. Overall, this notepad holder is great. As I said, there is one thing I would change about it, but it's certainly not a dealbreaker for me. I'm very happy with this purchase and look forward to putting it to good use in years to come.

I got the large notepad holder in black to match my thin briefcase with outside pockets. It is beautiful and matches the bag perfectly. It appears well crafted and constructed, and sturdy. Like other reviewers, I agree that it will take a long time to break in, which is o.k. I wish there was a clasp or button (it can't be a buckle Dave - I know you love those) to keep it closed. This would probably help with the break-in, and prevent documents from spilling out. I also agree that more functional folders on the left side would be helpful. Frankly, I cannot fit many documents in here. Last, I am in the habit of keeping a backup pen or highlighter handy, so a second holder would have been nice. All in all, I'm very happy. Thanks!

I purchased the medium chestnut for myself as a Christmas present and received it quite quickly to Calgary Alberta Canada with the new reasonably priced shipping to Canada of 15$. I hadn't purchased it before due to the previous high shipping costs. Opened the box and smelled beautiful leather... looked closer and really liked the simplicity and the craftsmanship. This is my third item from Saddleback and it would look great with my chestnut slim briefcase but wont stay my third item as I like it so much I'm going to give it to a great employee for a great year as a Christmas Gift. Well deserved but quality for quality and I hope he loves it for years to come. I'll have to order a replacement soon :-).

Got the large folio on black. I love the light pigskin lining on this piece, the contrast looks great. One thing I would suggest is an extra slot or pocket on the right hand side so that you can use side-bound notebooks as well. I've had trouble finding decent quality top-bound notepads suitable to go in this beautiful folio, though that might just be an Aussie issue! Other than that I love it and need to find more excuses to use it!

I could not be happier when i decided to add this small notepad holder to my cart. The design, the quality, the leather texture, thick leather but soft when you feel it. Too bad i haven't find the exact notepad, the notepad sold here mostly lil bit wider. The moral lesson, find the notepad 1st and get this beautiful crafted notepad holder.
