Read MoreThe high-quality materials used in this leather portfolio make it worth the investment. The full grain leather is extremely tough and water-resistant, while the pigskin lining is even stronger than the cowhide used for the outer layer. The German industrial marine grade polyester thread is extremely durable and resistant to wear and tear. The stitching is done in such a way that avoids any damage or tearing to the leather. Think about the number of great first impressions you'll make carrying this portfolio.
---Imagine the cow is killed and skinned. Imagine that... Now the thick hide goes to the tannery, but it's so thick that the tannery splits it in half, the top from the bottom, and now has two hides to sell. The top hide has all of the grain on it (Full Grain). All of the real tough and water resistant dense fibers. Grain is to a hide of leather what shingles are to a roof. Leather portfolios and padfolios made with this leather will last at least a few generations. And we use thick full grain leather. Thicker than boot leather.
---The bottom half is a hide called Split or Genuine leather. It dries out quickly and stains easily because the protective layer of grain is gone. Low quality leather padfolio makers will stick some lipstick on that leather and sell you a nice and pretty leather portfolio tomorrow.
---We glue and sew pigskin lining to the back of that already tough full grain leather. And pigskin is stronger than cowskin. This makes our leather portfolios twice as strong as a typical full grain leather portfolio.
---We sew our leather portfolio with an extremely strong German industrial marine grade polyester that won't fall apart or wear away easily. They use this German thread when it just has to last, or someone could die, like for parachutes and sails on ships. And our thread for the padfolio is the thick double ought version.
---A sewing machine is actually a perforation machine. If the needle holes are too close together, then the leather of the portfolio will tear like a perforated piece of paper. So, we sew at no more than five stitches per inch, which gets the holes further apart from each other on the padfolio.
---The side that holds the paper is only sewn on the right and bottom sides of the portfolio. It's designed to slide in a typical 8 ½ x 11 letter size, European A4 notepad from above or a spiral notebook from the side since that flap is sewn only on two sides.
---This leather portfolio is built with just one solid piece of leather to reduce seams. This is because seams are where, if there's going to be a problem, it will begin there. Yes, we took every detail into account to make this sleek notebook holder perfect.
I got mine about a year ago and have been fairly satisfied with it. I'd give it 3.5 stars. Keep in mind I have the older model pigskin, which feels like plastic and is very hard. The pad is very useful and I use it every day. It will not hold notebooks so you'd better like using notepads. It is always the nicest pad holder in the meeting, and one time I caught our executive director admiring it after I had left the room:) However, it is unreasonably thick and heavy for a notepad holder. I feel like it could have been made with 1/3 less leather/pigskin with the same functionality. Pro: Well made Holds a lot (pen, pad, biz cards, papers) Looks good Con: Think and heavy (why so much padding! it's not holding anything fragile after all) Thus takes up too much space in my briefcase

I wanted to get a new notepad holder for when seeing clients. My old one was getting a bit old and ragged. When I received the SBL large notepad holder I was a little surprised as to how big and heavy it was. I didn't use it - only occasionally when I had to. 6 months later the holder is now a bit weathered and is a lot softer. It is great - it is now my principal notepad holder and I love using it. It just needed to be worked in.

I have both the small and medium notepad holders. The medium is good for meetings with clients, co-workers, and others. I routinely take it with me to any business meeting. The small is with me all the rest of the time as I use it to capture notes on the fly, make lists, and keep track of all the flotsam and jetsam that is part of my everyday life. If I were only going to have one, I would get the small as it is really easy to carry and use. This is not to say the medium is cumbersome but both are hefty and solid being made, as they are, of thick, strong leather. Both are rugged, easy to carry, and gorgeous to look at. Interesting to me is that the small in chestnut is not that different in colour than the medium in dark chocolate. Each notepad holder works well as a writing surface. Both require a notepad that has a strong binding at the top. A simple, cheap pad of graph paper will not survive as the back easily separates from the paper because of the thickness of the flap where you insert the pad. You will need a pad with a strong top binding. I wouldn't cheap out on the paper. Note also that a bit of force is required to insert the notepad so that is another reason it, the notepad, needs to be good quality. The side pockets of both can hold a lot which is useful for organizing receipts and other pieces of paper. The medium will easily fit an iPad on the left hand side and I think you could fit an iPad Mini in the small. The small can carry a smaller notebook, such as a 3X5 Moleskine, in the left flap if you need to have a daily journal. The medium could also accommodate a 5X8 notebook. For that matter, a small kitchen sink might fit too. Overall, I am very pleased with these products. I also have a large classic briefcase that is also working out well. Both notepad holders fit inside it easily, either in the inner sleeves or in the large outside flap.

I have both sizes in black. Larger for work and smaller for personal. Love them both. I clean and treat three times annually. They both match me. I am as rugged as they are. I put the miles on them. Highest quality and construction. You pay more for excellent quality.

I had already purchased two of the wallets and was looking for something else to try out from SBL. I use the small notepads at work and then I saw this small notepad holder. I used this last time at work for 21 days straight and it held up fine of course. It only stayed in my office and took it to morning meetings, working on a drilling rig offshore in the Gulf of Mexico, I didn't want to take it outside the living quarters, nothing last due to the saltwater in the air. All in all, it works, looks great and I am about to buy something else now :-) Brent Jena, La
