Read MoreThe high-quality materials used in this leather portfolio make it worth the investment. The full grain leather is extremely tough and water-resistant, while the pigskin lining is even stronger than the cowhide used for the outer layer. The German industrial marine grade polyester thread is extremely durable and resistant to wear and tear. The stitching is done in such a way that avoids any damage or tearing to the leather. Think about the number of great first impressions you'll make carrying this portfolio.
---Imagine the cow is killed and skinned. Imagine that... Now the thick hide goes to the tannery, but it's so thick that the tannery splits it in half, the top from the bottom, and now has two hides to sell. The top hide has all of the grain on it (Full Grain). All of the real tough and water resistant dense fibers. Grain is to a hide of leather what shingles are to a roof. Leather portfolios and padfolios made with this leather will last at least a few generations. And we use thick full grain leather. Thicker than boot leather.
---The bottom half is a hide called Split or Genuine leather. It dries out quickly and stains easily because the protective layer of grain is gone. Low quality leather padfolio makers will stick some lipstick on that leather and sell you a nice and pretty leather portfolio tomorrow.
---We glue and sew pigskin lining to the back of that already tough full grain leather. And pigskin is stronger than cowskin. This makes our leather portfolios twice as strong as a typical full grain leather portfolio.
---We sew our leather portfolio with an extremely strong German industrial marine grade polyester that won't fall apart or wear away easily. They use this German thread when it just has to last, or someone could die, like for parachutes and sails on ships. And our thread for the padfolio is the thick double ought version.
---A sewing machine is actually a perforation machine. If the needle holes are too close together, then the leather of the portfolio will tear like a perforated piece of paper. So, we sew at no more than five stitches per inch, which gets the holes further apart from each other on the padfolio.
---The side that holds the paper is only sewn on the right and bottom sides of the portfolio. It's designed to slide in a typical 8 ½ x 11 letter size, European A4 notepad from above or a spiral notebook from the side since that flap is sewn only on two sides.
---This leather portfolio is built with just one solid piece of leather to reduce seams. This is because seams are where, if there's going to be a problem, it will begin there. Yes, we took every detail into account to make this sleek notebook holder perfect.
I just received my medium notepad holder and I am quite pleased with it. It is very comfortable in use, it is stiff enough for taking notes if you hold it, and it lays flat on a table to provide a good writing surface. It can swallow up an iPad and not even burp. The finish is beautiful, inside and out. And the aroma of newly-finished leather is intoxicating. About the lighter pigskin lining, I found that it got a bit darker when I applied a leather preservative to the lining of my classic briefcase. I expect the same is true with this notepad holder. As to why someone would want this, I still find in that a lot of meetings, the most responsive and easiest way to capture ideas unobtrusively is with a pen and paper. This notepad holder serves that requirement extremely well.

I've had the small notepad in Tobacco light brown for a little over a year. I'm in the military and I use it at work everyday as I go to meetings, etc. It works great with a spiral top 5x8 writing pad. I've also made it work with a spiral calendar on the left side. I cut a slit in the back plastic cover of the calendar so that it slides in the pocket and stays put -- it has worked great. The quality and workmanship are excellent. I often get compliments on it. Although I've scratched the leather carrying it around, it just continues to look better. In addition, the leather was a bit stiff initially because it is a thick, quality piece of leather. However, over time it has become more flexible -- just like a favorite baseball mitt. I am very glad I made this purchase. I know I will be using it for the rest of my career!

I grew tired of going through a number of cheap, giveaway-type portfolios that not only looked cheap, but fell apart pretty quickly as well. What's the point? Anyway, I picked up one of these in Chestnut on Dave's Deals and wow! Unless I lose it or somebody steals it, I can't imagine ever wanting or having to replace it. It rides in my Saddleback briefcase wherever I go, and after about 6 months it's picking up some nice character. I get a lot of compliments on it, and it's ALWAYS the nicest portfolio in the room. Go ahead and get one!

Prowling around Dave's Deals for days hoping a tobacco brown would come available. Couldn't wait any longer as my old pad holder needed to be replaced. Item arrived yesterday ahead of schedule (anything SBL can never come quickly enough!) It's a beefy, beautiful, aromatic piece. For the ladies, it works for us, too. Not too masculine. I now have both the small and medium. Thanks for the great products, Saddleback!

I bought the tobacco brown small note pad holder after I purchased the iPhone 5 phone case. I didn't really need it I thought, because I am a retired housewife, however not so. This beautiful little pad goes with me everywhere . I find that everyday I find more uses for it. At 70 my memory is now beginning to get bad. I use it constantly to write done things I want to remember. It goes in the car with me to all those church meetings retired people seem to have, and boy the compliments I get on it. I keep it on my bedside table at night because this is when I get those great ideas. During the day it's usually near me wherever I am at the time.?? I keep a calendar notebook in the pocket on the left (recently added), and finished notes in the right inside pocket under the pad, have more room on the other side for more stuf. The pen holder soon stretched to hold my favorite ink pen and its big When I first got it, the front cover wouldn't stay closed, but after a few weeks of bending amd working it, it now lays flat. ?? I almost died when I spilled a chocolate shake on it yesterday, but I washed over the whole front with warm water and a little soap and even the light scratches come off. So don't be afraid of gettin this thing wet as I did. ??I love this little guy, now I have to find a reason to get his big brother. Five stars all the way, Dave still has not let me down yet. Beautiful leather, wonderful workmanship, (love showing it off) great service. All my pieces look as I would carefully make them if I knew how, the USA should be proud to have the Sadleback Company. Not too many left in the USA are there?
