Tan full grain leather briefcase by Saddleback.

Functionality of a Leather Briefcase Backpack

Most of our leather briefcases convert into backpacks, including this one. Run the adjustable shoulder strap through the o-ring on the back of the briefcase, and clip it to the d-rings on the bottom. Now your hands are free to carry more luggage through the airport. This leather briefcase has a false bottom to hide your passport, spare cash, and other secret things. The d-rings are great for strapping on blankets, jackets, and wet sandals. And the main strap has a hole at the very tip, just in case you overstuff your bag or want to put an umbrella under the flap. The two front pockets actually have hidden pockets behind them too.

Materials in Our Leather Briefcases

This leather briefcase is made of full grain leather, which is the strongest there is. And then, we line the leather with pigskin, which is more durable than cow skin. Our thread is some of the best in the world. The strong industrial marine-grade polyester thread doesn't deteriorate like Nylon when the sun touches it. Our custom hardware is 316 Stainless Steel which means our clasps can hold up to a 750 lb. bag of cats. It's the metal of choice for when your life depends on it.

High quality leather briefcase.

All of Our Bags Use Full Grain Leather

We only use full grain leather. Sure, we pay a higher price to purchase full grain leather to make our bags. And we pay more by using traditional craftsmanship. To us, these are essentials to offering a leather briefcase with a 100 year warranty. Leather is like a roof. First, there is plywood, tar paper, and then shingles. The grain is like shingles. It's the toughest and most water-resistant part of the leather. A lot of companies shave off that grain to get rid of scars or blemishes so they can use more of the hide, but by doing so, they get rid of the toughest part. We don't do that.

Leather Briefcases Lined with Pigskin

Did you know pigskin is actually stronger than cowhide? It is, and that's what we line our leather briefcases with. Not only is it stronger, but it is also more flexible and has a nice feel. We could have left it with just thick full grain leather, but we wanted to give you the best of the best. By using both, you get the best for the inside and the outside of this large leather briefcase.

The Hardware in our Leather Briefcases

The hardware on this backpack briefcase is all 316 Surgical Grade Stainless Steel. That's the good stuff. The kind that doesn't corrode, pit, or rust like other metals. It's the best for when your life depends on it, and it's what we use because your life could depend on this briefcase (ya never know, right?).

Polyester, Great for Strong Thread in Leather Bags, but Not Great for Underwear

Polyester is awful for underwear or sheets, but it is the best for thread. We found the strongest polyester thread and used it in our leather bags. It's a marine-grade, UV resistent polyester thread that doesn't deteriorate when sun hits it.

Internal Pockets

Two small internal pockets are located in the main compartment, which is great for holding things such as pens, pencils, and other things that you might put in small pockets. The internal compartment is split into two main areas with a large capacity to hold a large laptop or two. So you can fit that huge 17" laptop in here without a problem.

External Pockets that Mean Business

The two front pockets on this briefcase are large and ideal for holding chargers and cables, passports and travel docs, phones, glasses, and a multitool. And behind each external pocket, you've got a hidden pocket. These pockets are great for things you might access more often, such as a cell phone or a USB hub, depending on how secure you need it to be and your own packing method.

Hidden Compartment in this Leather Briefcase

Yes, this briefcase has a hidden compartment that is large enough to fit a passport. It is located on the bottom of the leather bag and can be easily accessed by lifting a strip of leather. You will see it right away. The false bottom is great for hiding things such as money, your passport, or anything else you might not want anyone to find.

Emergency Cigar Holder

When I tell you we thought of everything, we did. In between the front pockets is a pocket that is good for carrying a cigar, a flashlight, pens or pencils, or Epi pens.

Leather briefcase with removable shoulder strap.

Removable Shoulder Straps

Not everyone wants a shoulder strap; they might prefer the hand strap or the backpack feature, so we made it removable. The durable shoulder strap is also made of full grain leather, just like our leather bags, and has the same quality stainless steel hardware.

Great for Traveling

It is also functional as a great carry-on for short trips or long trips. You can fit your large laptop and maybe even a change of clothes and other gear. For example, you might not want to put your suit jacket inside, but an extra t-shirt and shorts to wear. The Front Pocket Leather Briefcase fits nicely under seats on the airplane.

    Incredible bag

I got this bag in large chestnut about a week ago and it's starting to break in a little bit now. It's the perfect size I pack it full with multiple textbooks, files, cords, other novels/books, a couple laptops, workout clothes and room for an umbrella in the side. I highly recommend getting this bag, the quality is unbeatable. Chestnut is beautiful and rich and will age well while maintaining a rugged professional look. Only recommendation is to make the side pockets a bit bigger. Thanks Dave!!

    Good value for the investment

After much deliberation between the Front-pocket and the Classic, I pulled the trigger and ordered the Large Front-pocket in Tobacco. One of the reasons for my choice was the larger pockets on the side which I could slide things into…items which I need to access more quickly but don’t necessarily like to have in my pants pockets, like my phone, calculator, wallet, keys, etc. Even with less interior depth than the Classic, I can still get my Macbook, a PC laptop, folders, books, iPad and even two cable bags (to keep smaller things organized and handy inside.) Yes, it’s heavy but even when I packed out my last backpack with the items above, that became heavy too, and this bag looks so much better. It is expensive, but honestly, anytime you need to make a decision between price and quality…it’s not what you don’t pay, it’s what you don’t receive. For almost a year I complied in my wish list on Amazon a variety of leather briefcases in order to get a sense as to what features were important to me in a briefcase. One comment that appeared in a number of reviews was the phrase, “It’s not a Saddleback, but...” Which of course led me to find out just what a Saddleback is…and I never looked back! Even after just a month of carrying this bag, I feel as I have gotten exceptional value for what I have invested and I predict that in the years to come, not only will I no longer be replacing my bag about every three years (because it wore out or broke down due to poor workmanship or because I got tired of it) but I am confident that I will break down and wear out before it will!

Tough, sturdy and beautiful design for the pro.

This is my 2nd briefcase from SBL. The large FPB doesn't fit my EDC just like my Classic briefcase, but my 15" laptop fit easily and still have around 1 1/2inch spare, 17" could fit like a glove. The interior pigskin suede lining surprised me, it doesn't get dirty, stain and scratch easily, hopefuly all the SBL bag will consider this as their interior lining. The side pocket too tight for the water bottle, but it's tight enough too secure small goods for fast response. The front pocket quite big for misc things. The chesnut large FPB looks good & pro, it mean business and you mean it when you carried around the meeting room. Love the large FPB design & new chesnut leather texture. If Dave could improve. Please change the handle with the Classic. It feels sturdy, tough and more comfortable than FPB handle. Eventually this is the sturdier and beautiful fullgrain bag you ever find + the 100years warranty.

2 Cable Bags will provide additional storage pockets!

I ordered the Large in Tobacco brown. I have read elsewhere that Tobacco is "running a little darker" than the main images for this product, and I think I would agree with that. However, not in a negative way. The color is a rich natural-looking brown, with no tinges of yellow or tan. Perfect. As for the size, I agree that this bag is the perfect compromise between a thin briefcase and the suitcase-like depth of the classic briefcase. It is neither too deep, nor too thin. I am 5'7", and while the bag is large, I do not find it too large for daily use. For those of us that have previously been in the habit of using fake-leather or fabric bags with lots of zippers and pockets, like myself, I was a little worried about not having enough places to store my goodies. I would recommend ordering two of the cable bags, which fit perfectly side-by-side at the bottom of either of the main storage compartments. They are a nice size, and very functional for storing items that you don't want to throw into your bag loose (e.g. memory sticks).

Darker color is on the medium one, not as shown

I am very pleased with the bag. However, I ordered the Medium and it came in the darker color displayed for the large size, not the lighter color as shown. Be prepared for the wrong color. They must have them mixed up. Anyway, once I saw the darker color in person, I became attached to it and didn't want to return it. I also own this same bag in chestnut. They are wonderful bags with plenty of room. I love the front pockets, they are real helpful. The darker color does come scuffed up, so be prepared for that "worn in" look already on it. I actually prefer the "worn it" look in this darker tobacco color. I have already had many comments on my bag and enjoy looking at it as well as using it. It is built with the high quality you expect from SBL. Just be careful on the color. (I didn't know they had two shades of tobacco.)
